Advantages: The Most Boring People On Earth Can Have 4 Minutes Of Fame
Disadvantages: Not Suitable For Viewers With A Soul
Mastermind is a BBC television quiz show that pits four contestants against each other over two rounds of quiz questioning.
The first round is 2 minutes of questions asked by the quizmaster on the subject of the contestant's own choice. This round is known as the specialist subject round.
The second round of questions, also 2 minutes in duration, is one of general knowledge questions.
The scores from both rounds are totaled together to determine a winner.
In its first stint from 1972 to 1997 Icelandic born Scottish resident Magnus Magnusson was the quizmaster and more or less made the show his own. Since its revival in 2003 Welshman John Humphries has been the quizmaster.
The show is known for the black leather swivel chair that contestants face their questions in and the catchphrase "I've started, so I'll finish" which the quizmaster uses when he is half way through asking a question as the 2 minute time limit runs out.
The programme is also distinctive by its gloomy filled with doom studio atmosphere, the austere physical appearance of its contestants, their unwillingness to show any visible sign of delight when they win and the fact that the winner gets no more than a glass trophy or naff modern sculpture for winning the whole series that is presented to them by some intellectual figure from the arts or sciences that only 0.1% of the population have ever heard of.
Summary: Yawn x 10 to the power of a million.

- 14/03/09 You mean, they don't win a money prize or something? What's the point in that? They should just go on 'Who wants to be a Millionaire?' instead. |
