Advantages: Very watchable
Disadvantages: Some episodes better than others
Midsomer murders is one of those Sunday night type programmes that are a treat to watch.
Set in the county of Midsomer, the programmes usually open with the demise of some unfortunate inhabitant of an idyllic village. Methods of dispatch vary widely, there are some very creative people in these parts, death by cricket bat, billhook, celtic spear......
The solving falls to DCI Barnaby and his sidekick. It's long been a joke that wherever Jessica Fletcher went in 'Murder she Wrote' people should beware, that applies with these two too!
Scratch the idyllic surface of these pretty villages and you'll find a seething pot of frustration, resentment and anger, all about to explode into murder!
Like Marple, there are red herrings aplenty and the twists and turns do keep the viewer on their toes, in fact, a quick trip to the kitchen could mean you literally losing the plot. The complexities are half the fun and the murderers are always revealed at the end with the help of flashbacks for clarity.
The casts are usually very starry and the production values are very high. Not cutting edge, not edgy at all but engrossing, escapist and very watchable.
Summary: Escapist murder mysteries
