Advantages: Hilarious
Disadvantages: Can go slightly over the top at times
I have to confess to recently becoming increasingly glued to the Dave channel on TV. Dave features a number of programmes originally aired on BBC main channels which now firmly find their place on Dave. These include QI, Argumental, Dragon's Den, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Mock The Week.
Mock The Week is a more improper and cynical look at the week's news, ten times more risky than Have I Got News For You, whcih is in turn 10 times riskier than the news and current affairs we see on the regular news bulletins each day.
Mock The Week, surprisingly enough, does leave you with a bit more knowledge about current affairs than you would first think. It features Irish comedian Dara O'Briain as the host of the show, as he attempts to steer two teams of celebrity comedian panelists into giving us hilarious renditions of news items and various rounds where they are given virtual freedom to attack the news and everything relevant, or indeed irrelevant, to it.
The panelists feature a number of comedians on a regular basis, including Hugh Dennis and Frankie Boyle. These two seem to be the most regular comedians, and often have me in stitches. Frankie is a brash talking Scottish comedian, Hugh a dry sense of humour. One round I particularly like is 'What They're Really Thinking' which the the two of them often do, where one will announce something seemingly innocuous, and the other will say what they really mean, or thinking. Hilarious.
The main focus of the show is the comedy, and they really do 'mock the week' and pick on the most current news stories, and RIP them to pieces. I really like watching this programme, and although I do feel I know a little about the week's news after watching, there is no way you could say it's a particularly reliable source for the news, and I naturally watch it for comedy value as opposed to keeping up to date with things!
Overall, I highly recommend watching this. However, a word of warning for anyone who is easily offended, as the show is full of potentially offensive material for some. You need an open mind and to not easily be offended. If this fits you, give it a watch - it's hilarious!
Summary: Hilarious comedy mocking the week's news

- 22/01/09 Hugh Dennis is hilarious.
On "Things You Don't Want To Hear on The Tannoy" he pretended to be on a supermarket loudspeaker and in a gruff, common voice proclaimed:
&q uot;Cleaner to aisle 3 please, cleaner to aisle 3. Someone's come on the broccoli."
Talk about ROFL! |
