The premise of modern family is a pretty basic one, a half hour sitcom about the lives of a family only with this being 2010 the makers have reinvented the family to bring them bang up to date.
There is Jay, an older man who is married to Gloria the beautiful, feisty Latina who is half his age and living with them is her son many from her previous marriage. Jay was always busy in his previous marriage with work and now with Gloria he is determined to enjoy the perks of being married to a younger woman and she is enjoying having the financial security she has never had before.
Jay and Gloria are a perfect match for each other, they genuinely love each other but so much comedy comes from the older man beautiful younger woman pair up such as Jay being mistaken for Gloria's father. Jay knows he wasn't the best dad the first time round and is determined to be a better one this time to Manny however Manny is an old soul trapped in a young body which makes it difficult for Jay as Manny isn't into the traditional things young boys are into. The fact that Gloria and Manny are immigrants from Columbia also gives the writers plenty of opportunities with bringing out the old stereotypes but it's written in such a funny way I seriously doubt anyone could take offence at it.
His daughter Claire who is uptight to the point of being obsessive is married to the much more easy going Phil. They have three children together, teenager Haley, middle daughter Alex and youngest son Luke.
Claire and Phil are complete opposites, she is really serious about everything and he is a bit of a walking disaster. His heart is always in the right place but no matter what he seems to do it ends up going wrong everytime he is basically a big kid. The children are also put to good use with Haley being a vacuous teenager who is only interested in boys and makeup and Alex being incredibly smart and saying things to Haley that just go over her head. The youngest boy is like his father in many ways and is seen as a little simple for lack of a better word.
The last family the series focuses on is Jays gay son Mitchell who like his sister is also uptight and married to a much more outgoing person in his partner Cam. Together they have an adopted Vietnamese daughter Lily.
Cam is definitely the stand out of the show and everything he says or does is laugh out loud funny. There is a scene where they accidently lock Lily in the car and he panics trying to get her out that is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Also another one is when they bring Lily home for the first time and when they take her to her room Mitchell sees that Cam has painted a mural on her wall of the two of them holding her up like greek gods which may not sound all that funny but had me snorting coke out my nose from laughing 
Modern family is definitely in my opinion the funniest show that is currently on television, in only one season the show has managed t breathe new life into the half hour sitcom which in the days of friends and Sienfeld ruled the airwaves but in recent years have more or less disappeared. The show is filmed in a mockumentary style but unlike the office the producers have decided to be more subtle with it and we only occasionally have the characters giving a knowing look to the camera and during each episode the members of families will give to camera interviews which a lot of time bring heart to the show.
I have now seen all the episodes from season one and there has not been a disappointing one yet. Yes some episodes are better than others but it is the only show currently on television where I am guaranteed to laugh out loud several times. For anyone who has yet to catch this show then I urge you to find what channel its playing on and watch it!
Summary: Modern family is destined to be a modern classic of American comedy
