I grew up with Monarch of the Glen, or as I called it when I was younger, Monica of the Glen. Monarch of the Glen is set in the stunningly rugged Scottish highlands, and revolves around the McDonalds - Archie, the youngest boy, who moved away to start a restaurant in London after the death of his older brother, Jamie; Hector, his eccentric elderly father who loves nothing more than messing up his plans, whiskey, and gallivanting with his best friend Killwilly; Archie's darling and incredibly funny mother, Molly - a clan who, for several hundred years, ruled like kings over their land, but in the modern day, conditions are bleak. The BBC's sunday night drama Monarch of the Glen has now been running for 4 series and a new one is due this autumn. It can't come too soon for the hundreds of Monarch fans who have fallen in love with this gentle, humorous programme. Monarch is set in Scotland, at a big house (well in fact more of a castle really!) called Glenbogle. Many of the storylines revolve around the financial difficulties in keeping Glenbogle going which are faced by the young laird, Archie, played by the pretty gorgeous Alastair Mackenzie (his mother is played by Susan Hampshire, who is excellent). Set against the stunning backdrop of the Scottish Highlands, this Sunday evening comedy series from the BBC is one of the best programmes on TV at the moment. If you've seen it you'll know what I mean, but if you haven't then read on . . . The first series was aired back in 1999 - 8 episodes in total, it focussed on young Laird Archie MacDonald as he struggled to choose between his secure life in London as a budding restauranteur, or coming to the rescue of the family's old, crumbling Scottish estate and taking his position as Laird of Glenbogle.
