Advantages: Tony Shaloub and strong writing
Disadvantages: The scheduling for showing Monk in England...grrr
This television series got me through my third year dissertation. I adore Monk. My friends are sick of my obsession but I've converted a few of them, as I always (sometimes drunkenly) protests "a detective with OCD whats not to love?!"
A crime based series that revolves around central character Adrian Monk as he tries to go about his day to day business with his crippling OCD and phobia list (it includes milk). His assistant Natalie (I'm assuming it's still her as we haven't had series 7 here yet) his two friends Leylan (chief of police) and Randy (on over eager, sweetly stupid detective.)
Monk didn't always used to be such a mess, when he met and married the love of his life Trudi his fobiles as they're sometimes deemed were under control. But after she was tragically murdered in a car bomb that he believes was intended for him he fell apart.
At times this series is awfully sad, hilariously funny and is always beautifully written. The real reason I'm so obsessed with this programme is Monk himself (played wonderfully by Tony Shalhoub), a well rounded character who at times can be incredibly selfish because of his problems - and we the audience are allowed to dislike him for this, all the while understanding why he behaves in such a way.
It takes a brave writer to allow his audience to dislike the central character, and that's what makes this show so unique and enjoyable in my eyes. It's characters are all well written and the scripts are fantastic. When the first actress who played Monks assistant quit over a disputed pay issue, Monk explains in the first episode with her replacement that his last assistant left because she wanted more money.
It's little things like this that got me through those late nights last year.
I recommend this programme to anyone who enjoys crime dramas, you won't be disappointed.
Summary: If it ever happens to be on, give it a watch!
