Advantages: Erm, I can't really explain

Disadvantages: A distant memory

Yes, I remember those days well, back in the 70s/80s when Monkey first hit our screens, along with The Water Margin. Japanese made (I think) and the story of how a young Buddhist monk (Tripitaka) seeks enlightment in the company of a disgraced god (Monkey), the commander of the Heavenly Guard (Pigsy) and the bald-headed one, who's name I can never remember! Oh, and the horse, formerly a water dragon.

If you were looking for special effects, or well-written, meaningful storylines, or top-rate acting, you had come to the wrong place, but, as with all cult items, the series had something about it to keep you glued to the screen. Maybe it was because I was an impressionable teenager, but the show holds warm memories.

I think the one great thing it had was that it didn't take itself seriously and came across as very tongue in cheek. Of course, whether it meant to do that is another story! Oh, how I miss those innocent days.....
