Moomins, TheNewest Review: ... live in Moominvalley, they like to collect things and go exploring. Why I like them: *Moomintroll is sweet and endearing and always seems to get into mischief with Snufkin and Sniff. * The books are engaging, well written with beautiful illustrations * The Hemulen is a super creation, a stroppy fellow who likes to collect things in the woods. His bad temper is one of the comic moments of the books * The Groke is the evil presence in the Moomins. She is a dark sinister being who arrives in the night usually and brings with her a chill. The Groke conjures up fearful images * There are a series of books available and some lesser known one... more |

I love the Moomins, the books are magical and are suitable for children and adults alike and the tv series took the Moomins into a magical and special place. This is not the moomins I knew as a child! I used to love the books and the original cartoon as a kid, and when I read in the TV guide one day that the moomins were back on TV I was so glad! However, as I settled down one morning (no college! yay!) to watch it, I was appalled! Now, japanese animation isn't always the best, but normally the cartoons are good enough not to notice. However, The Moomins was neither. The animation was bad, the voices were just plain scary and why was it so sunny and cheerful? I thought they lived in the depths of forests and mountains in Scandinavia?! RB ... Read the complete review

I was only a small child. So young. So innocent. I was too darn young to see something as...frightening as the Moomins. Huge white hippos who can talk? Little My and her pointy nose? AN ICE MONSTER WHO SILENTLY TURNS ALL IN HER PATH TO ICE??? The first series of the Moomins was a dark, menacing affair, all paper cut-outs and flickering lights. And yet I sat, transfixed for every installment. Glued to my seat by fear alone. Fear I tell you. The Moomins frightened me like only the child-catcher in Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang had before. Clearly kids are made of sterner stuff in the wilds of Scandinavia. However, even I shed a tear when the Moomins was remade as ... Read the complete review

The original stories were written by Finnish writer Tove Jansson and have been translated into 34 different languages. Now, of course we also have the cartoon Moomins. Moonmintroll is the sometimes not very bright off-spring of Moominmama and Moominpapa. He has a lot of strange friends including a hermit, his friend Snif and electric fish which sometimes bite. The Moomintroll books are full of magic and intrigue but, unfortunately , when the stories were made into cartoon films ... Read the complete review
