He ventures each episode into a fancy dress shop where he tries on a costume. Depending on what costume he has tried on, he is magically transported to a far off land to enjoy some mini adventure, that is linked to the kind of costume he is wearing. At the end of the episode he returns to the shop and goes back to his normal self. Animation: The animation is very basic, almost block like and not very sophisticated, but that adds to the charm of the show. There were a mere thirteeen ep... more |

Goodness me! Mr Benn! Is it really spelt like that, I never really stopped to consider it might have two n's. Anyone who has ever come across this programme will know what a joy it is to watch. Based on a series of books by author David McKee, it was then commissioned as a tv show by the BBC. The programme ran from 1971 to 1972 and was repeated quite a lot in the eighties. Mr Benn is another one of those wonderful kids short TV programmes from the 1970s. It features a character called Mr Benn, naturally. Who likes to... erm... well for want of a better phrase... dress up.. He is a business man type character in his suit and bowler hat. We see him leave his house at 52 Festive Street and he strolls through his town, where he will eventually end up at the Fancy Dress shop. When he gets to the Fancy dress shop, the shopkeeper will always appear "as if by Magic". Mr Benn then proceeds to try on an outfit which would then, providing he went through the "door that always led to adventures" ... Read the complete review

Mr.Benn is part of my childhood. I have recently got a dvd which includes all the episodes ever made. Pure t.v. heaven I should say. I use the dvd at the Infant school where I work and good old Mr. Benn hasn't lost any of his charm, the children love him today as much as I did all those years ago. So, who is Mr. Benn. Well, I guess he is quite difficult to describe really. He wears a suit and a bowler hat and carrys an umbrella. He looks like he works in the city, as a Bank Manager perhaps. In every episode he goes to the same fancy dress/costume hire shop. (I never knew why). He chooses an outfit and goes into the changing room. When he comes out of the ... Read the complete review

I remember my daughters' used to love Mr Benn when they were younger, so when I saw the series was being repeated last week on one of the kids' channels I decided to watch it for old times sake and also to show my granddaughters' as they had never heard of this programme. Mr Benn is a lovely little chap who looks very much like a bank manager, until he walks into a magical fancy dress shop that is where "As if by magic, the shopkeeper appears". Mr Benn will then choose a costume and go through to the changing room to try it on, only when he leaves the changing room he doesn't go back into the shop but to a fantasy world where he takes on the ... Mr Benn is a well known kids' TV programme which featured the main character, Mr Benn, and his vivid imagination as he embarked on a different adventure each episode. I remember watching reruns when I was a child, and every now and then they are rerun for our kids' further enjoyment (and bewilderment!) Each episode featured Mr Benn, an ordinary man, enter a clothe shop, and try on a different outfit. His wild imagination would then take us on a trip to somewhere the outfit suited, and we would join Mr Benn on his adventure in that place. A good example is him trying on some khaki clothes and taking us on an African safari! There are rumours that the ... Read the complete review
