Murder She Wrote is an American murder mystery show that ran from 1984 to 1996 making it the longest running mystery series on television.
Even though this is now an old show and quite a PG series I absolutely love it. I think it brings back memories of old times and a lot of nostalgia. Some of the clothes and outfits are so 80's but really great fun to watch and reminise.
It stars Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher the crime writer and amateur sleuth. She is what the show is all about and she really makes the show. Jessica was an English teacher but after her husband died she becomes a mystery writer. She is very successful and very well know around the world. It's quite funny because a lot of the episodes feature Jessica going abroad and seeing friends and wherever she goes people recognise her. Jessica lives in Cabot Cove in MAine, a beautiful, picturesque coastal town in Maine.
The episodes all follow the same formula but for me they never get boring. I think this is because it is a murder mystery show so you never know who dunnit until the end really.
Normally, if an episode takes place in Cabot Cove Jessica will have a friend or relative who she hasn't seen for a while come to town. Then more often than not, they are the ones accused of the murder that has just taken place in the town. I find it really funny that everyone who seems to know her ends up in trouble, you would be scared to be her friend if you knew that was going to happen. However, she seems like such a nice person that you really would actually love to be her friend as she always cares about her friends so much.
Sometimes, like I've said above an episode will take place somewhere around the world. Jessica has either gone to a book conference or to visit one of her many friends around the world. Jessica always seems to know loads of people, famous people as well. So, generally it just her as the constant character in the show and new people every episode and I think this is what keeps it fresh too although when she is in Cabot Cove there are some regulars.
Jessica always seems to know the police chiefs around the world too and always tries to help them with their cases. At the beginning they never want her to help. They think she is just a dottering old fool who has no clue so she just gets on with searching for clues without them. I always wonder though how they haven't heard about her solving all these cases around the world and why they don't ask for her help right from the beginning.
Jessica always solves the murder in the end. She has a hunch and then she generally always sets up a bit of a sting for the person who has committed the murder. They never see it coming as they never think she is clever enough to solve it. At the end she always confronts the person, usually on her own and I'm always scared that the person will try and kill her but the police turn up a few minutes later and all is well.

- 05/05/09 I love watching this too but she seldom fights back and gives off too much of an old granny writing novels look. And what a wonderful life she has constantly travelling doing not much else other than popping up when a murder has occurred a la Hercule Poirot. |
