Advantages: Very funny
Disadvantages: It's only on for half an hour
Zoe Wannamaker ( Susan )and Robert Lindsey ( Ben ) shine in this gem of a British Sit Com. The constant oneupmanship is hilarious and the situations are ones in which most of us have found ourselves.
Susan is the backbone of the family or likes to thinks she is, while Ben is just looking for an easy life with a bit of peace and quite and maybe a bit of football here and then. With there 2 children they are drawn into strange and wonderful circumstances from which usually one of the parents has to back down or at least compromise. The backing down and compromising just isn't in either Susan or ben's nature and this leads to most situations being an absolute scream.
Susan's occupation as a tour guide does come into the show every so often but Ben's dentist job is the constant source of many a good laugh. He likes his job but isn't too keen on the people he has to treat which causes a few problems. There is also a lot of reference made to the fact that Susan's cooking leaves a lot to be desired.
His eldest son Nick is played excellently by Kris Marshall. He is always coming up with hair-brain schemes to make loads of money, and it's more often than not that it's Ben who has to bail him out. Nicks head is way in the clouds an ben is constantly just trying to bring him down to earth with little avail. He is always on the look our for a job but when one comes up he seldom holds on to it for more than a day. he is a sex machine or so he believes and Ben is perpetually bemused by the flow of lovely females that pass through the house.
University student daughter Janey ( Daniella Denby Ashe ) is the spoilt daughter who constantly annoys younger brother Michael played by Gabriel Thompson. Michael is forever changing his views on life an goes through the normal teenage phases, much to the annoyance of Ben.
Most of the scenes do take part in the family home with ocassional ones being shot in bens dental surgery. You have to feel for some of his patients since they seem to take the brunt of any family problems which are happening.
The characters all work well together with rather more than usual family bickering. There is always some food for thought in each episode, but it is the high humour level that makes this program stick out from the rest.It reminds me a lot of Butterflies which had a very similar theme.
The first series are currently on re-run on BBC3 and are well worth watching. So if you feel in need for a laugh tune into My family and you will almost certainly come away chuckling.
Summary: A very funny british comedy
