Advantages: Funny, Easy to Watch
Disadvantages: None
My Name is Earl has fast become one of my favourite television shows in recent months. It's been on the television for quite some time now I believe, but it's only recently that I personally have taken an interest.
The show's theme is really easy to pick up and newcomers to the show can get the gist of it in just one sitting I think. Earl is on a mission to put right all of the bad things he's done in his life to pacify karma. He's made a list of everything he's ever done to hurt people, and one by one he's going around trying to make amends for it. In fact the premise is so easy that they pretty much sum it up for you in the opening credits to each show!
On his mission for goodness, he's joined by his brother Randy who's quite honestly the stupidest person you could ever hope to meet. I love that Earl takes his brother's idiotic behaviour with a pinch of salt and a good dose of humour though, it makes the big oaf seem kind of lovable.
Also starring in this is Joy, Earl's trailer trash ex-wife and Crabman, Joy's new partner (and the father of the child she tried to pass off as Earl's when they were still married apparently). Then there's the object of Randy's affection Katalina, a Mexican maid who doesn't have the right to live in the US let alone work in the motel that Earl and Randy are staying in.
When I first started watching the show, Earl was in prison to do his time for a previous crime. Inside he found all kinds of new and innovative ways of putting right the things he'd done wrong in the past. Like he helped an inmate who he'd previously wronged turn his life around. What makes the show so funny is all the weird and wonderful hoops Earl has to jump through to get strange situations in order. In prison he wanted a blade and wound up going all around the prison doing favours for a series of different people just to go back to the first one to get it.
This is very relaxed comedy drama that I find really easy to watch. It doesn't matter if I miss an episode because it's always so easy to pick back up. I find it doesn't even matter if I wind up watching an old re-run on E4 in place of the newest episode because each episode is like a little comedy all on it's own. I think this will wear thin for me in the end, but for now I'm really enjoying it.
Summary: Highly Recommended
