Advantages: Catchy theme tune
Disadvantages: Sometimes cringe-worthy
My Super Sweet 16 is a programme on MTV about kids who have completely outrageous birthday parties, often costing around $200,000 or more (not including birthday presents!). The kids aren't always turning 16; some are turning 15, others 18.
These kids are generally the most spoilt brats you can ever think of - in fac,t beyond that. If you have kids you should watch it purely to be grateful yours aren't like that! For example, one show I watched saw a 14 (turning 15) year old girl have a screaming temper tantrum at her mum because she got her several hundred thousand dollar car on her actual birthday instead of at her party. She even 'threatened' to have her party cancelled because of it.
This, strangely enough, does make the show more bearable as these kids clearly don't live in the real world and have no idea how badly they come off to other people.
The show starts with them going on about how amazing their life is and what they own (usually lots of designer bags and a toy dog, sometimes a jet ski thing or yacht). It then goes on to their planning, giving out invites and general 'No you can't come I don't like you'. Some even have pre-party parties. Then there's the buying of the party outfit, the venue, the 'celebrity' guest singer [funny how the A listers are always 'busy' but there's always a local celebrity to take it in hand]. The party itself usually has a good mix of showing off, fights and gatecrashers. It then ends with people saying 'I had the BEST time ever', and the birthday girl or boy saying 'No one will ever beat my sweet sixteen party'.
Yeah, it's kind of predictable, but fun. I prefer the ones with the girls as the boys are generally very same-y and not as mean or amusing. They've also started a spin off series with some of the people, who get taught something about life as they are sent to stay in the desert, mountains, with Thai tribe, things like that. I've seen an episode and it's quite funny watching them deal with living with spiders and having to kill their own food and stuff. Definitely a turn around.
Summary: Watch it once and be afraid. Be very afraid.
