Advantages: fun, entertaining, Suggs, interesting to see who can really sing, the celebs get into the spirit of it

Disadvantages: Danielle Nichols, the monkey, too many group songs and not enough solos

Night Fever is on Channel 5 from 6:50pm til 7:45pm on Saturdays. It is great fun to watch, being light-hearted and especially as it looks as if the people involved are loving every minute too.

It is masterfully presented by Madness frontman and long-time stalwart of pop music, Suggs (Graham MacPherson). He is assisted by the rather annoying and squeaky Danielle Nichols of CITV fame.

The format of the show is basically a boys versus girls karaoke competition, where teams of often B-rated celebs compete against each other. Occasionally, you get someone interesting, but let's face it, you're more likely to get Kirsten O' Brien from CBBC or someone you vaguely recognise from an Australian soap opera. But this is Channel 5 after all and I doubt the budget for this programme is very high.

Last Saturday's show was filmed in front of an audience of pre-teens, making Suggs' job much harder, as they were peering over his shoulder at the questions and shouting out the answers ! Grr. Usually though, the audience are just excitable teens. Ho hum.

Another good thing about the show is that the band, Point Break, seem to be regular guests and I rather fancy Dec. <grin> Oops, bringing down the tone of the review there, sorry.

It is also interesting to see who really has vocal talents too - you might be surprised that thingy from Brookside *can* sing, but You-Know-Who from a famous pop group can't!

I do have a few qualms about this programme. For one thing, I would much prefer to hear more solo attempts, instead of the repeated all boys or all girls singing together. After all, I want to know who can't hit those high notes, I'm like that!

There is also an annoying monkey (bloke in a costume) who really has no place in the programme, except to embarrass Suggs and make him wonder if fronting this show was a good idea after all. Suggs' personality is definitely one of the best thin
gs about Night Fever, he has a dry wit and it is interesting to watch his facial expressions! Is it really twenty years since Baggy Trousers? Sigh.

I actually spent my New Year's Eve watching Night Fever and it was just as good as any of the other television offerings. It is entertaining, a good laugh and a chance to catch celebrities doing something a bit different. They usually join in well with the spirit of the programme too, standing on the desks and belting out that Queen classic or that B*Witched ballad.

So - Open a bottle of wine, lie down on your sofa (or bed) and enjoy an hour of Night Fever.

I agree with your opinion on this show. I find it is often a nice surprise when actors who don't normally sing get up and sing their hearts out completely in tune. Also good fun. Someone I used to work with was on the show once and knew that he would be up and singing long before it was recorded. So it took a little bit of the surprise out of it as I originally thought people were picked out of the audience at random obviously not!
