Nighty Night

Newest Review: ... falls in love with her married neighbour, Don, and then does everything and anything (and I mean anything) she can to get her hands on him. Jill stops at nothing in her pursuit, even if it means faking her husband's death, cruelly abusing the disabled wife of her heart's desire or faking a rape by Don's young son. Julia Davis is outstanding as egotistical maniac Jill (I don't know how she kept a straight face throughout) and Ruth Jones is her usual brilliant self as the stupid 'best friend' who unwittingly gets dragged into Jill's plots and always ends up the worse off for it. I cannot recommend this series highly enough to those who enjo... more

Nighty Night is the most filthy, obscene, twisted series I have ever watched and I loved every minute of it! The series follows hairdresser Jill as she falls in love with her married neighbour, Don, and then does everything and anything (and I mean anything) she can to get her hands on him. Jill stops at nothing in her pursuit, even if it means faking her husband's death, cruelly abusing the disabled wife of her heart's desire or faking a rape by Don's young son. Julia Davis is outstanding as egotistical maniac Jill (I don't know how she kept a straight face throughout) and Ruth Jones is her usual brilliant self as the stupid 'best friend' who unwittingly gets ...  Read the complete review

There are some television programmes it is just impossible to explain...Nighty Night is one of those. I was recently trying to explain it to a friend of mine and within about three sentences. I realised that it was impossible to explain the many twists and turns in the plot without making the programme sound...well rubbish. There were two seasons of Nighty Night created by the BBC and the second follows on nicely where the first one left off, now let me see if I can explain it! Jill is a hairdresser, who has a husband with cancer who she tells everyone is dying, although he isn't, he is getting better. She has a mad crush on ...  Read the complete review

Comedy is such a personal thing isn't it - a person's taste in comedy speaks volumes about them I always think. Personally I like my comedy a little bit dark, and Nighty Night is one of the best black comedies of recent times. Originally airing on BBC3 in 2004, Nighty Night was written by and stars Julia Davis, former writing partner of Rob Brydon, as Jill Tyrell. Jill is truly one of the foulest comedy creations ever to grace the small screen - a sociopathic, chronically selfish manipulator, ignorant of other people's feelings, who describes herself as "a mid 20's widow with a lust for life and a flexible spine". For some reason most of the unlikeable comic ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Sick, twisted and utterly superb (197 words)

Black comedy has always been a favourite of mine and Julie Davis (writer and star of Nighty Night) is the queen of dark comendy. Having written for many years with Rob Brydon (such as Human Remains) she finally branched out on her own. Rob Brydon has been quoted as saying that Julia was often the driving force behind the black comedy of their join ventures. Nighty Night is a tale of a delusional and desparate woman, Jill Tyrll, whose life takes a tumble for the worst when her husband recovers from cancer! Jill doesnt let this get in the way of the new life she was goping for and tells everyone he's dead anyway, hoping to leave him in a hospice. From then ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Nighty Night: Descent into farce (234 words)

This back comedy started really well but about half way through the series it seemed to deteriorate into a total farce relying on more and more frenetic extreme humour whereas in the beginning it had a cringingly uncomfortable feel to it that was at the same time quite funny. Initially it remined me a bit of the second series of The Office, when you found yourself inwardly cringing at the antices of David Brent while at the same time laughing at those very same antics. I'm not suggesting that Nighty Night was in the same class as The Office just that the humour was a little similar at times. In the show Julia Davis starred as Jill, a middle aged ...  Read the complete review
