Advantages: hilarious, repeated on play uk
Disadvantages: series over
The Office is a comedy which is, unsuprisingly, set in an office. It was originaly shown on BBC2 earlier this year and is now being repeated on Play UK. Those of you who have seen 'orrible on BBC2 will obviously approach another sitcom from this channel with fear. Fortunately it is infinitely better than Johnny Vaughan's turkey. Ricky Gervais plays the manager, David Brent. His character is a kind of self-styled people's boss. He likes to think that he is loved by the staff and he is contantly playing tricks and cracking jokes to keep up morale. Unfortunately for him he doesn't seem to realise that the staff find his crazy humour about as funny as Vaughan and pretend to enjoy them to ensure that they keep their jobs. The kind of nonsensical management speak that Brent uses is all the more funny due to the fact that it is the kind of stuff heard too often from people trying to make their job seem important and create the illusion that they know what they are doing. One member of staff who does worship Brent is Gareth, ex army (terratorial) and now assistant to the manager. His over serious attitude is hilarious during an investigation into the mystery of who sent a doctored email with Brent's head on a pornographic picture. The sincere attitude of Gareth contrasts sharply with workmate Tim who is fed up of the company. The petty squabbles which take place between these two are very amusing and include Tim putting Gareth's stapler in a jelly after Gareth refused to lend it. Other characters include Chris Finch, Brent's role model. Finch is portrayed in earlier episodes by Brent as a comedy genius. When he finally appears in a later episode his crude anecdotes and jokes give an indication of Brent's level of humour. Needless to say Gareth finds him hilarious whilst Tim is less than impressed. The receptionist, who is engaged, also takes part in some amusing scenes. These involve T
im and his obvious attraction to her. The series culminates with a tricky decision for Brent - should he betray his 'family' (colleagues) and take a job which will mean they lose theirs? If you missed it first time around it's well worth watching The Office now.
