The office. Quality Comedy or droll boredom? Well, I think it depends on your work experience. Basically, the Office is a comedy programme shown on BBC 2 that poses as a mock "fly on the wall" documentary about office Life. For 30 minutes per episode it shows various humourous goings on in an office, mainly around the pedantic office boss David Brent and his hapless staff with meaningless lives. So why do we find it so funny? Well, its because it is so true to life and we can all relate to it. We all know these situations and characters from our own work experience. This is what we find funny. We are laughing at ourselves and our work colleagues as we see them in David's staff. I say WE loosely because not everyone finds this funny. My wife tries to watch it and does not even raise a smile. This is because she does not work in an office environment and never has. She does not experience these type of people on a daily basis. This is where the humour stems from. Familiarity. Anyway, lets get on with the cast. David Brent is played by Ricky Gervais. Ricky also writes this series and does a wonderful job of it. However, does it take a lot of writing as it is just being observant and writing a bit of humnour to it. The Character David Brent is the office boss from hell. He thinks he is very funny and loved by his office staff. Nothing could be further from the truth. His staff think he is a prat! Also in the office is the receptionist, Dawn (Lucy Davis) who is a bit of a dogs body and in a relationship with one of the guys from the shop floor. However, she is secretly fancying one of the office staff, Tim, who also likes her. This brings the humour of the office flirting and romance to us all. Something some of us have experienced all too well. Tim (Martin Freeman) is the typical wideboy who thinks he is gods gift. However, he lives with his parents and can see straight through David
39;s act. He finds his colleag ues iritating and particularly his desk partner Gareth. Gareth (Makenzie Crook) is a bit of a nerdy perv with the ladies. He says things without thinking and sometimes gets the wrong reaction. He does not realise what he is saying! Filming is typical fly on the wall style. Its an interesting concept to use and one that works well. Overall it is a humourous programme but one that normally only appeals to the office worker. However, it is worth checking out even if you dont!
