Advantages: You're kidding right!
Disadvantages: None
John Sullivan’s Only Fools and Horses is perhaps the nations favorite comedy and with good reason. It’s been 20 years since the now notorious Del (David Jason), Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst) and Grandad (Leonard Pearce) ducked and dived their way onto our screens in that classic yellow van and comedy wise it hasn’t aged a day. Residents of Nelson Mandella House in Peckham the Trotter family make the simple story of making ends meet and dodgy dealing in South East London into quite simply the most hilarious sitcom ever. However as any fan will tell you they were not alone in making this show so popular, Boycie and Marleen, the adorably stupid Trigger, hapless Micky Pearce, down to earth Denzel and Mike the barman have all brought their own individual charm and hilarity to Only Fools. In later series you will also find Raquel and Cassandra who become the poor suffering wives of the Trotter boys. After the sudden and sad death of Leonard Pearce, Uncle Albert (recently departed Buster Merifield) was bought in. Although he never managed to fill the shoes of Grandad he still made me laugh with his tales of ‘during the war’ and his cheeky background remarks. However unlike Grandad who would often give as good as he got Albert was more often than not the butt of the jokes. There are a million and one reasons why I love Only Fools and Horses, just to mention a few would take hours so I’ll outline the most important. The humor is probably top of the list, they managed to make it obvious but not stupid and I loved the way they combined a sad or emotional moment with fresh humor without ruining it. Secondly I love the way every character has been developed over all the series so they never go stale or boring. And of course not to be missed are the subtle touches, Del Boys phrases, Triggers determination to call Rodney Dave, Grandads little remarks and all the bits added to every episode to make them what the
y are. Dels determination to “become a mill-yonaire” got them in some hilarious scrapes but they nearly always managed to get out of them with some luck. Everyone has his or her favorite episodes but I’m afraid mine are just far too numerous to mention so I’ll end by saying this is and will always be the “crème de menthe” of the sitcom genre.

- 08/03/01 Only the one mistake in this opinion, very useful one though.
The mistake is, Raquel was never Del's wife :-) |
