Only Fools And Horses was an incredibly popular British sitcom that ran from 1981 until 1991 with seven series and then sporadically until 2003 with shows such as Christmas Specials. It was written by John Sullivan and starred David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst as two brothers living in Peckham, London, first with their granddad, played by Lennard Pearce, then their Uncle Albert (Buster Merryfield).
Jason played Derek Trotter, known as DelBoy for his wheeling and dealing on the black market, constantly with a new scheme or product to get them all rich. Lyndhurst played Rodney, the younger brother who wanted a normal, peaceful existence but was caught up in the tide created by his energetic brother, very much his elder. Pearce played granddad until 1984, when the actor died, and Buster Merryfield's character Uncle Albert was introduced not long after, running to the end of the production.
Del's two main friends were Boyce and Trigger. Boycie was a dodgy car salesman and Trigger was the simplest thing on the world, constantly naive and gullible and forgetful. He called Rodney Dave all the way through the tenure of the show. Del's love interest centred mainly around Raquel (Tessa Peake-Jones), especially towards the end of the show. At the beginning it showed him going out to find a date, taking Rodney with him. Rodney found love in the arms of Cassandra, played by Gwyneth Strong.
The show was absolutely hilarious. Its setting and story of a working class family trying to make a bit of money any which way they can, living in a bedsit and getting themselves into various predicaments was classic. There are many scenes which are talked about as the best sitcom scenes of all time, including one where Del and Rodney dress up as Batman and Robin and run through the streets of London as they're late for a party. There is also a well known one where Del goes to lean on the bar and the hatch has been moved ane he falls straight through.
If you haven't seen Only Fools And Horses, then you are missing out on one of the best sitcoms to hit our screens. There are no negative points for me on this show, save the fact that it no longer made. It is brilliant, and it is worth catching any reruns that might appear on TV, even buying the DVDs themselves. Classic sitcom.
Summary: Only Fools And Horses - spot on!
