Advantages: Good clean humour
Disadvantages: none
This must be one of the most popular comedy shows ever. I don't know anyone who doesn't actually like this sitcom. There have been seven series and eighteen Christmas specials since the programme started in 1981. John Sullivan has written some really funny scripts for the actors. The humour does come mostly from the dialogue but it wouldn't be so funny without David Jason (Del) he is the real start of the show. Nicholas Lyndhurst (Rodney) also plays his part well but for me David Jason makes the show. The sitcom is set in a flat in a Peckham (London) tower block , Nelson Mandella Mansions, and it follows the story of the 'Trotter' family (Del, Rodney and Grandad) and their struggle to make it rich. There is lots of 'ducking and diving' and Del always has a new scam up his sleeve. If someone wants it, he can get it! Much of the humour comes from the fact that we know these schemes aren't going to work and its often possible to work out what will happen in the end. John Sullivan who wrote this script also wrote 'Citizen Smith' and he selected David Jason to play Del after he had seen him playing Grenville in 'Open All Hours'. So he is what the writer envisaged when he created the part. This is one of the funniest comedies ever written and the more you see it the funnier it gets.
