Operation Good GuysNewest Review: ... I like it a lot, but this is as politically incorrect as you’ll get in modern TV. VERDICT Operation Good Guys wasn’t particularly groundbreaking, but it never really set out to be – the idea of a spoof documentary goes right back to acts like Monty Python and the 1982 film ‘This is Spinal Tap,’ but Good Guys came along at the right time, during a decade obsessed with such real-life shows. ... more |

‘Operation Good Guys’ was a BBC show focussing on a special police unit set up to bring the notorious criminal mastermind ‘Smiler’ McCarthy to justice for his numerous crimes. Sadly, the team proved themselves not only inexperienced, but also massively inept and the second series saw them humiliatingly demoted to uniform duty and put in charge of less vital investigations. Don’t feel sorry for them though; it was only a comedy series. This spoof fly-on-the-wall documentary thankfully never took itself too seriously, and while not being quite as good as ‘The Office,’ it was a bit better than ‘People Like Us.’ The show was written primarily by Ray Burdis and ... Operation Good Guys is one of those shows that'll only appeal to some people, but it will appeal to them in a big way! Essentially making fun of both fly-on-the-wall series, this preceeded the Office, and it also seems to spoof the Bill (although I've never watched that so i wouldn't really know). The show lasted for three series, each comprising the standard six episodes for a BBC comedy series, and there were basic plot threads that connected the series as it went along. Mainly though, it was just some hilarious characters being really, really bad at their jobs! Notable episode plots include: the "Good Guys" having some time off, ... Read the complete review

Operation Good Guys focuses on a documentary about a police force. The force try various different jobs, but usually end up failing and ending up in hillarious situations. The different characters are all very easy to relate to, and are all funny in different ways. Firstly, the boss, DI Beach (played by David Gillespie) tries desperately hard to get his squad of inept officers to work well, but instead of actually doing things himself to help the squad, he just yells orders at his assistant DS Ash (Ray Burdis.) ... Phew! Just what is the appeal of this show?! I can’t see it myself – I find it immensely boring despite having a very respectable cast, few though they may be. The Royle Family – Ricky Tomlinson (Dad), Sue Johnston (Mum), Caroline Aherne (daughter) and Ralf Little (son). All very well known and impressive actors/performers which is probably just as well as any unknowns would probably make this show even more of a crashing bore. The series is currently off our screens (BBC1) I believe but in the last series Aherne’s character married her dire monotonous boyfriend and – Horror! – they’ve started breeding! Oh ...
