Advantages: It is hilarious, They are amazingly normal
Disadvantages: Sometimes can seem staged
Are The Osbournes really the most outrageous family in the world, or have they been pigeonholed by MTV? Before this phenominally successful series, I knew who Ozzy Osbourne was but had no idea of the problems he had experienced over the years, or the way in which he lived. Then MTV decided to to add to the number of reality programmes on our screens at the moment, and we all got an insight into the unconvential lives of the British rocker and his family, who really give Ozzy a run for his money in the madness stakes. The programme was first shown in America at the end of 2001, and then MTV in the UK, and then Channel 4 showed the same episodes recently. MTV initially chose Ozzy as their subject in order to attract music fans, but the appeal has meant the programme has reached a much wider audience than ever intended. 53 year old Ozzy lives in Beverley Hills with his 50 year old wife Sharon, who looks young for her age, and children Kelly and Jack, and strangely as they are teenagers, their Australian nanny Melinda. Their other daughter, 19 year old Aimee moved out as she did not want to be part of the show. On first seeing them, you are taken aback initially by the amount of swearing, and generally how they talk to each other. Then it becomes quite hilarious as we watch them basically live in their kitchen. Ozzy looks permenantly stoned and certainly very fragile, frequently stuttering over his words, which shocked me, and he is constantly calling for his wife or painting in the kitchen. He changes instantly when performing for his fans though, and although not as wild as he once was, he certainly still comes across as pretty fierce. Sharon is a pretty formidable character, although she suffered abuse for many years when Ozzy was taking drugs and drinking. She is also Ozzy's manager, and winds him up with some of the antics she wants him to get involved in. She is currently having treatment for bowel cancer, which has been recorded and
will be shown in the second series. The relationship she has now with Ozzy is shown as warm, comfortable and very loving, which is a far cry from the early days they were together. 18 year old Kelly is a typical spoilt little rich girl, fiesty to the point of needing a slap, and she uses the word vagina to get attention back on her when it may have wandered. She changes her hair colour on a daily basis, and is being hailed as a fashion icon, which is unbelievable when you see some of the outfits she puts together. 17 year old Jack is my least favourite member of the family, as he is so full of himself, and totally lives off his name in order to try and build his own record label aged 16! It was recently reported that he was dating model Catalina, which even to a man with one eye is clearly a lie, as he has to be one of the most unattractive boys, both physically and in his manner ever to walk the planet. The family are also trying to outdo Dr Doolittle with the amount of pets they have, which include an amazing seven dogs, and to make matters worse, very few of them are house trained, and they end up doing their business all over expensive rugs and chairs. The star pets include a bulldog called Lola who belongs to Jack, and seems to permanently vomiting or weeing. Kelly has recently signed a record deal on the back of the show's publicity, and her debut single was a cover of Madonna's 'Papa Don't Preach' was well received by the critics. A phrase to sum the family up would be 'over the top'. I don't think they are the most outrageous family in the world, or the most dysfunctional, but I am sure that The Adamms Family must have been based on them! Keep an open mind where the choice language is concerned, and what you do see is supportive family who love each other dearly.

- 03/12/02 hehehe... I missed this the first time around and have only caught a couple of episodes. I think the boy is creepy and stalker material if ever I saw it. Otherwise, hilarious, I do feel a bit sorry for them, and I'm quite often shocked at their behaviour - especially when Ozzy was chucking stuff through the neighbour's windows. Parents becoming the children, becoming the parents. All very strange. |
