Advantages: Unique interviewing style, brings out the best in everyone

Disadvantages: No longer hosting a talk show

As an interviewer/talk show host, Michael Parkinson was unique among many in that he asked the most pertinent questions of his guests then actually sat back and let them answer without interrupting them. He was genuinely interested in them and never used the programme to massage his own ego. It's such a shame that he is no longer hosting his own show because they were all so entertaining. Many a time I have watched thinking that the line-up sounded quite boring but he always brought out the best in all his guests.

There are many memorable moments which have become classics in television, from Rod Hull and Emu to his chats with Mohammed Ali and George Best to whom he was very close; he always showed the greatest of respect to the stars of his shows no matter what they may have put him through - and he did suffer, as all those who watched him with Emu can testify.

He introduced us to new singers and musicians, too, and his studio band were fantastic to listen to.

I know that we all have to retire but it would be great if Michael Parkinson could be commissioned for another show - there is no-one to replace him that I can think of today.
