Advantages: Very funny bloke

Disadvantages: Not that great on scripted bits

Paul Merton, whether he is in his own series, in "Have I Got News For You" or even doing a voice-over in Rex the Runt as a Doctor ("that'll be ten quid"), is really a funny bloke!
He has such a sly sense of humour that is hillariously funny, but also makes you think - because he tends to pick up on things that other people wouldn't.
Paul Merton -the series, is really funny, you just have to look at the cheap opening titles! There is a weirdness to it aswell though, such as the bloke with the dolphin-head, and the strange, but funny bloke with a dog attached to his foot.
Merton really shines in Have I Got News For You Though - unscripted ad-libs are where his talent lies, especially when it comes to the part of the quiz where the bits of the headline are missing, and also in the caption competition.

In Room 101 though, he is not that great, I believe Nick Hancock was better at it, because although Merton is his sly self, it is very much scripted. This was also shown in his remakes of Hancock's Half Hour - it was good, but not great, and very forgettable.

I agree with you about Hancock but then, the original was always going to be an impossible act to follow. It just proves that it wasn't ever just the script. Hancock added that touch of genius.
