Newest Review: ... stronger material, this drama, which was supposed to be the forerunner of a new Poldark series, might have stood a chance of success, but the material is distinctly weak. As a stand-alone programme, it tends to fall over rather a lot! Many, many threads of stories are introduced, but two hours doesn't give enough time for any of them to be properly developed and nothing is resolved by the end of the episode. It is easy to see that they were setting the scene for future episodes but it gives a very unsatisfactory feel to the programme. The serialisation of Winston Grahams Poldark novels was hugely popular back in the 1970's. This particular drama is based on The Stanger from The Sea. So when it was decided to make another Poldark 2 hour drama, in 1996, it aroused a lot of interest and controvesy. The general consensus of opinion was that the original Ross and Demelza, as played by Robin Ellis and Angharad Rees, should return. However new actors were cast in their place. John Bowe, possibly best known for his wonderful portrayal of serial killer George Marlow in the original Prime Suspect played the part of Ross and Mel Martin played Demelza.
