Advantages: Great entertainment

Disadvantages: Not on our screens any more

The Price is Right is a gameshow that ran for many years and was presented most memorably by Bruce Forsyth. Before him, I believe Leslie Crowther made the show as famous as it became, although it hasn't actually been on our screens for a number of years now.

The format of the show featured a number of contestants chosen at random from the audience who would 'come on down' and then have to guess the price of a certain item. The closest would then go on to another game and get the chance to win a small prize and progress to the final game, where they would play the other winners in the show to determine who had the chance to go on and win the grand prize which, in true gameshow style, was usually a car or a holiday.

The games throughout the show were quite varied but nearly always involved guessing the prices of products in a number of various different games, ether allocating different price tags or playing a 'higher or lower' game. The audience was the key in the entertainment for us at home, as well as the excellent presenting and comedy involved. The show always gave a little giggle and entertained very well. No doubt the audience were prepped beforehand. They certainly gave it their all each show when the contestants had to guess.

I miss shows like this. Too many gameshows nowadays seem a little desperate and the game show doesn't really hold pride of palce on our screens as much as it used to. Even Family Fortunes, with its pride of place on a Saturday night, doesn't appeal to me any more. Perhaps it is to do with the style of presenting in the past going out of fashion, and the true British entertainer such as Bruce Forsyth no longer coming up through the ranks, but it would be nice to have a show such as The Price Is Right back on our screens - maybe it would revive the British gameshow somewhat.

Summary: Great show that is sadly no longer produced

Sorry, my mistake. Bob Barker hosted "The New Price is Right" from 1972 until 2006/7 and now Drew Carey is the host there. The original "Price is Right" started on TV in the USA in 1956 with Bill Cullen as the host until 1965.

This was an American gameshow originally, with Bob Barker presenting it back when I was a kid (i.e., before you were born, I'm sure).
