Advantages: Very funny and you'll learn something too!
Disadvantages: Nothing!
QI is a panel game show on BBC2 and BBC4. This is a well loved show although little known, but has actually been on the go for around 5 series now.
The show is hosted by national institution, Stephen Fry with regular panelist Alan Davies. There are then 3 guests each week forming two teams (one with Alan Davies). Many familiar faces pop up quite regularly - Jo Brand, Rich Hall, Phill Jupitus, David Mitchell, Jimmy Carr, Sean Lock, Bill Bailey and many others pop in from time to time like Johnny Vaughan and Vic Reeves.
At first glance, QI looks like any other panel quiz but it is in fact completely different! Whereas in other quizzes, panelists are rewarded for correct answers, in QI they are rewarded for being interesting. This is where the show gets it's name, 'QI' for 'Quite Interesting'! The questions are therefore of the more bizarre nature and often lead the contestants into giant traps by asking them seemingly easy questions like 'how many moon's does Earth have?' which you obviously answer one to but the answer is in fact 'two'! Quite interesting?? YES! Panelists are then given points, not necessarily for being correct but for adding interesting facts to the quiz which relate to the questions. And wrong, blundering answers result in points being deducted. This usually results in most people (if not all) having a negative score at the end of the show - especially Alan Davies who plays a good fool and seemingly wanders blindly into the most obvious of traps!
QI is light entertainment at it's finest! Stephen Fry is a fantastic host - full of quick wit and amazing facts and Alan Davies is a noble sidekick! 99% of the time the guests that appear on the panels are incredibly funny too and the whole show is very enjoyable to watch. I haven't watched an episode that hasn't been incredibly funny and you usually learn something too!
In previous years, QI has been shown on BBC4 then repeated on BBC2 but rumour has it that it's due to shift to BBC1 for the coming series. I'm not sure that this would necessarily be a good move as usually the move from 2 to 1 is a killer for any high rating BBC2 show and I'd hate to see QI main-streamed to fit with BBC1 Friday nights! The show is also on perpetual repeat on the digital channel 'Dave' which often has QI nights where you can get a full hit of facts and humour in one evening!
If you're as big a fan as we are, you might also like to know that there are a few QI books full of fantastic and bizarre facts!
Summary: Very funny panel show with lots of interesting facts!
