Advantages: Scott Bakula & Dean Stockwell

Disadvantages: it's no longer being made

QUANTUM LEAP was a time travel show with a difference. It starred Scott Bakula as Sam Beckett. Sam was a scientist who discovered a way to project himself into the body of anyone who had lived during his lifetime. He experimented on himself and found himself trapped on an adventure through time where he would inhabit someone, change their life for the better and then 'leap' into someone else.

When the show first began, the idea was that Sam could only 'leap' into normal people - I believe that at one point one of the show's creators said "We won't be having Sam leap into Lee Harvey Oswald or anything like that". Of course, as the series ran its course, and viewing figures began to dip, that's exactly what they did - Sam leaped into Oswald, Elvis Presley, and an acquaintance of Marilyn Monroe.

The other star of the show was Dean Stockwell as Al. Al was on 'observer' from the future - a holographic image of one of Sam's colleagues. Al was Sam's link with the future, and always wore garish clothes which we were led to believe were the epitome of style where he came from! Stockwell is an excellent actor - he honed his craft from being a child actor in the 1940s, and he's still acting in quality film and TV today.

One of my favourite episodes is THE CURSE OF PTAH-HOTEP, which feels a little like an ‘Indiana Jones’ episode. Sam leaps into an archeologist who is exploring a tomb, accompanied by a rather beautiful assistant (and I’m not talking about Al!). The banter between Sam and Al is as usual what makes this show rise above the rest, especially when Al lets us know his feelings regarding people who are dead!

Overall the series was a 'fun' show. It would occasionally take on more dramatic storylines, such as abused wives, but on the whole it was escapist entertainment, and it's a shame that it's no longer being made today.

How about a
'reunion' movie?
