Advantages: Fills that difficult gap just after Neighbours, What a theme tune, What a hero
Disadvantages: How can I fault Quincy?
Gawd bless the BBC. Ah, they know how to fill an afternoon. For years now we've been treated to such delights as Ironside, Perry Mason and Diagnosis Murder (with Dick van Dyke AND HIS SON Barry van Dyke. Grand), but by far the best of the BBC's daytime offerings is Quincy. Yes, Jack Klugman (the man, the myth) stars as the charasmatic forensic scientist, Quincy, yet another tv character who wishes he was a policeman but isn't. But, oh, Quincy, what a guy you are. You live on a boat of all things (just like Columbo's coat and cigars, read unconventional, a man who does what he wants and sitcks to his guns), you shout a lot, you never do much actual work and you very rarely show your upper teeth. If you have very little to do with your life (like me), wait for Quincy to come on and play the Quincy Upper Jaw Challenge. Theres a prize for who ever spots those teeth first (not really). But, we must ask ourselves, what would the police do without Quincy. He tirelessly avoids work to catch the baddy who stole little Jimmy's bike/sells drugs to fine young American teen sports stars/dumped waste in the rivers/murdered high court judges/put a bomb on a plane and so on, and on and on. But its not all work for our hero. No! After a hard day hiding from his boss and doing something he finds far more interesting instead (what a man, what a role model), he retires to his local bar run by tvs least convincing barman (Don Giovani) and decorated in exquisite taste on a nautical theme (no expense spared here - they even have sailor hats for the barmaids). Quincy has also made the time to find an unfeasibly young wife who follows him like a shadow in later shows. But then, what gal could resist Quincy's charms? - he lives on a boat remember. He has no upper teeth. He always gets his man. I know, in my heart of hearts, that I could be doing something far better with my time than watching 70s re-runs but thats why Quincy is my hero. He could be
slaving away over a hot bunsen burner all day in the lab but no, no such toil for Quincy. What a guy.

- 03/10/01 If an ageing character actor with a range of attractive pullovers can wow the ladies like this, there's hope for us all. Excellent op. |

- 16/09/01 Ah-ha another hero. But don't forget Sam, Astin and Monahan - wonderful characters too. I still watch it even though I must have seen it often enough to know every line! |

- 15/09/01 I love sitting back with a cup of tea and leaning back and turning on the T.V. to (you guessed it) Quincy, the man. He does have a way with women and that smile. It's to die for. Your op was very informative and well written. Thanks for taking the time to share your opinion. |
