Twelve o'clock, theres the bell. On with the coat, and out the door as quick as possible. Running down the road, waiting at the crossing, hoping the 'slow' lollypop man would hurry up, mumbling answers to his questions, and dashing off as soon as the man in the yellow suit had reached midway. One look at the watch, 12.05, oh my gosh only five minutes to go..... . On and on running, sweat pouring off my brow, but no time to stop, will miss...., home in sight at last. The time 12.09, the reason for the rush? A childrens program on Thames television. Good i made it, the music starts, and a warm feeling rushes through my body, and a smile sets on my face.

I was ten, this was my home lunch, and the program was RAINBOW. I never missed it, i was always home dinners, so i could see it. Mum would have lunch waiting, and spoil the first few minutes, complaining that i didn't say hello to her, and saying she didn't like me eating my lunch in the lounge. I argued and always cooperated by promising to use a tray, and not to spill lunch down my clean uniform. I always did, and had threats of being forced into school dinners, but i wasn't listening, i was oblivious to her moans and groans. Goerge and Zippy were having another row, Zippy was claiming he was the best, and Bungle was complaining as usual, and then in walkes Geoffery, the peacemaker, and all settles down, just in time for a song from Rod, Jane and Freddy. By the time the program had finished, my lunch had gone cold, mother has fallen asleep on the armchair and the dog, was barking to go out for a wee. Then it was a mad rush to get back in time, sick coming up where i rushed just after 'lunching', just getting through the school gates as the bell was ringing. I was always last in the line to go back in. But i didn't care, all the sour faces, of my friends, who had to endure a school lunch, then played the usual had games, and marbles, a few had plasters on
their knees, and red stained faces, the boys had holes in thier trousers, and the girls had their care bear stickers confiscated till the end of the week.

My face was always the same, smiling, and thinking to myself that i'd definately had the best deal.

My memories came flooding back the other day when i found a video of the fantastic programme. I bought it, and i began to shake, i began to sweat, i paid and rushed to the bus stop, jumping off the bus as soon as it got to the stop. I rushed indoors, and began to waffle, ordered the kids and my husband to sit and watch a new video i had bought. I couldn't stop smiling as i placed the video in the recorder. My husband was in the background, trying to guess what it was, and the kids were complaing they were going to miss childrens BBC, then the music came on, my husband was in a state of shock, the kids were mesmerised, and i was dancing and singing just like Jane, lol. We all sat smiling, laughing, listening, throughout the whole of the video.

The kids now love it, and my husband and i always suggest it to the kids, when we ask them to chose a video, you might call it propaganda - too right!!!!
