Advantages: Interesting the first few time around, has a bit of a 'feelgood' factor
Disadvantages: Ramsays ego and swearing get tiresome
When all is said and done, I really dislike Gordon Ramsay. Saying that I don't know him - I only know his TV persona, where he is portrayed as one who is straightforward, to the point and in all probability honest - all fine qualities but in his hands he seems to demand far too much respect from others. It is this ego of his which really grates me. I appreciate he is at the top of his game, but I draw the line at liking someone who he would probably want to ow down to him
This program is at its simplest about top chef and restuaranteur Gordon Ramsay going about the process of raising the quality of a sinking restaurant business somewhere (generally in the U.K. for the Brit version, though I recall he did one in Paris owned by two of his fellow Scots).
On a deeper level this programme it would seem is more to do woth selling the Gordon Ramsay image, the persona, the 'brand'.
The programme is formulaic.
Present to the audience a failing restaurant.
Along pops Gordon Ramsay.
He will introduce himself to the owners and staff, then make himself at home.
Get the staff to cook and serve him a meal which, as sure as eggs are eggs, after the first mouthful, he will utter the phrase, with his typical inflections "this is ... shit"
Time for action
Gordon, at this point after, berating the staff will go into a quiter corner with his crew and strip off to his ugly chest, whilst saying a piece to camera, then get into his chef's whites.
From this point on we get many opportunities for Gordon to act the hardman, get into scrapes and arguments and generally show folk who is boss (editing is a wonderful tool).
There may be a sacking along the way, as Gordon recommends the owners get rid of a chef or two,
We will get to see the usual dirty kitchen, get to see it cleaned up, then get to see the kitchen and decor of the dining room magically transformed.
All usually ends well with the failing restaurant turned around and on the up.
It is an 'interesting' programme the first few times around, but when all is said and done it is couch-veg TV when you are so laid back you can't even be bothered to be bothered about what you are watching.
Summary: Reality TV which becomes tiresome after the novelty has worn off
