Randall and Hopkirk

Newest Review: ... Bob mortimer with little known actress Emilia Fox as Jeanie, Hopkirks wife. The series follows the same pattern as the original series that in episode one Hopkirk played by Reeves is bumped off, but unlike the original series where the killer mistook Marty for Jeff in his involvement in investigating his infedelitys, this time the right man is taken out. The story for the first episode is pretty traditional an art dealer is found cheating by the duo, and arranges for one of his suffering artists played by future timelord david tennant in an early role to off him along with his wife who apparently has put together his best work and wants to ... more

Premium Review Randall and Hopkirk: A more zany 21st century detective show (362 words)

In 1969 the first and dare i say it only series of Randall and Hopkirk Deceased was aired, all 26 episodes made and released as a singular series, and that was it. The series was popular enough that at the current time i am writing this i am watching a rerun on television. In 1999 they decided to remake the series a new look for a new millenia and we were given the new randall and hopkirk deceased starring comedians Vic Reeves and Bob mortimer with little known actress Emilia Fox as Jeanie, Hopkirks wife. The series follows the same pattern as the original series that in episode one Hopkirk played by Reeves is bumped off, but unlike the original series where ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review As unsatisfying and insubstantial as a rice cake (729 words)

Cue chilling ghostly chimes and that oh so resonant theme tune of Monty Berman's, dating back to the original 60's version, before the magic and the atmosphere is shattered by the entrance of Vic and Bob, jesters by royal appointment and so stylistically stereotyped these days that you just cannot take the show seriously in the way that you could way back then with Ken Cope and Mike Pratt, alias Marty and Jeff, central characters in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). Is it drama with comic overtones, or high comedy with a hint of a storyline linking the set pieces together? Well, the presence of Vic and Bob make this irretrievably placed right in the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Randall and Hopkirk: Light-hearted ghostie series (327 words)

Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer seemed at first a strange choice for the lead characters in this series which originated in the 60s. A few years ago the original series was repeated on terrestrial tv, and I always enjoyed watching it. This update of the show was Reeves and Mortimter’s first serious attempt at acting and, although this is obvious to the viewer, if you cut them just a little bit of slack you will begin to really enjoy the programme. Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) were/are a private detective agency until Hopkirk was murdered in the first episode (hence the title). Reeves is the one who plays the ghost of Hopkirk, who’s skills of drifting ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Remake better than original shocker? (168 words)

Being a big fan of the original Randall and Hopkirk series, I wasn't sure how good the remake would be, although it does star Vic and Bob, but I was very pleased with the result, although it's a pity there were so few eps, but I'm sure they'll be more along in the fullness of time. Vic and Bob star as the title duo, with Vic getting wiped out in a slightly wierd accident (he's on the bonnet of a car that goes over a ciff!), but he comes back when Bob starts to fall apart, and realises that he can still talk to Bob, and so they set about trying to solve his murder. And then the series kicks off properly. The special effects are pretty ...  Read the complete review

Randall and Hopkirk: Ghost!!! (120 words)

I watched the original series when it was repeated on Granada Plus and was very surprised when Vic Reaves and Bob Motimer were going to do a remake I thought this will never work, but it did. In case you are not aware Randall and Hopkirk (deceased) are 2 detectives with Hopkirk well and truly dead. With only Randall having the ability to see him together they solve crimes with the usual love interest. Some nice special effects that could have been a lot better with some more cash spent on them. I look forward to the 2nd series which is due to start at the end of September I think although I am not sure. ...  Read the complete review
