Advantages: Interesting to see how ordinary ingredients can make a decent meal
Disadvantages: Last part of the show doesn't make sense to me
This programme looked as though perhaps the format had had its day - but then along comes the credit crunch and we all need to know how to tighten our belts (!) and cook good cheap meals.
The idea of this show is that two members of the public - usually friends, or reations, or linked in some way spend £5 on ingredients and then together with the celebrity chef they cook up something amazing in only 20 minutes.
Depending on the ingredients this could be a main course or a dessert but almost certainly the ingredients tend to be for a main course. They do cheat a little bit because they also have a "stock cupboard" which contains lots of extra ingredients that you need to make the dish work - such as cream and herbs. They always seem to find a bottle of wine in their as well - so the £5 meal tag is a little false.
I like the idea that it is all done in real time so you do get to see the chefs whizzing about the studio. The programme is hosted by Ainslie Harriet - who tends to be a love him or loathe him character, personaly I find him quite amusing and he does talk a lot a sense at times - he doesn't put on any heirs and graces and just gives honest comments.
When this programme first started it was hosted by Fern britton and Ainslie was just another one of the chefs but I think he makes a better host than Fern.
It is also a game show because the audience has to vote on the team it thinks was the best - strange idea when they don't get to taste it so the winner tends to be the one that looks the best.
I really don't understand the point of the final part of the show when Ainslie does some cooking - perhaps this is just so he doesn't forget he is a chef!!
Summary: A interesting cookery show
