Advantages: Funny, Good receipes
Disadvantages: On BBC2 So can easily be forgotten about
This programme is a refreshing change from many of the other cookery programmes on our tv's today. It can't be that bad as my five year old son loves it. He comes home from school and after watching a little childrens tv he asks me to turn over to BBC2 to see if Ready Steady Cook has started. He likes the way they are always winding each other up and sometimes making mistakes. For a five year old this is very important as they should learn that not everyone is perfect. In fact no one is! At school they try to teach them that it is ok to make mistakes as long as you are learning from them. And to come home and see top chefs on television making mistakes and accidentally burning food makes all the difference. The programme, in case you haven't seen it is basically a competition between two well known chefs. It was originally hosted by Fern Britton but now it is hosted by Ainsley Harriot another well known chef. The two chefs have either a member of the public each or a well known celebrity each to help them. Each of these people brings a bag with selected items in that they themselves have bought in the shops. They are only allowed to spend £5.00 on the items in their bag. Once they have arrived on the set with the chefs the bags are tipped out and the chef has to decide what he is going to make with the ingredients he has been given. They then have a set amount of time to make the dishes and at the end the people/celebrities helping them get to try the food whilst the chef explains how he/she made the dishes. The audience then holds up cards to vote for the winner. One team is Red Tomatoes and the other Green Peppers. The winner usually gets a food voucher or money for a charity. It is good to see how the chefs come up with their ideas and make some fantastic dishes. The receipes are on Ceefax so the most adventurous of us in the public can recreate them! They have also recently added to the en
d of the show a part where both chefs are given the same ingredients and asked what they would make with them. The audience gets to choose the best idea and then that chef has to make the dish. This can then help you to realise that the same ingredients can go to make so many different things. This is a very funny and well thought out show. It has been running for a number of years now and I am sure that it will continue to be successful, especially if my son is not a minority!
