Advantages: Very educational and interesting
Disadvantages: Short lived
The Really Wild Show is a kids' wildlife show that aired in the 1990s, with the aim to give children an insight into the lives of different types of creatures. The show was based in a studio, with a group of presenters led by Terry Nutkins.
Each episode featured the audience consisting of school kids, with various animal keepers coming into the show with a wide variety of species to talk about them and explain how they function, what they eat, etc. The show would also be interspersed with video clips of one or more of the presenters actually visiting the animals' habitats to watch their lives. These snippets were always interesting when I was growing up, and I remember being fascinated by the show during my teens.
Terry Nutkins' children went to the same school as me, and this heightened the interest of the show among my fellow pupils, and so it was often a topic of disscussion at break times, particularly which creepy or scary creature they had had on the school the last time, and what we'd like to see next time. I think the show captured its audience very well, and it was a shame that it finished airing.
These days, there are nature programmes in abundance with a multitude of Sky channels dedicated to nature and its wildlife much as The Really Wild Show was. I recommend watching any reruns of the show if you get a chance, but as they were quite current at the time, this is unlikely to happen. If anyone does happen to know if they are rerunning them at any time, please give me a shout - I'd love to watch them again.
Summary: Very educational programme well aimed at kids
