Advantages: Hysterical, Original, Never UnFunny
Disadvantages: Beware serious addiction
Few programs can match or compete with the reputation of Red Dwarf. Widely acknowledged as the only successful sci-fi sitcom ever made, it is a combination of superbly adolescent humour and incisive social satire. A little about the plot first (as if you didn't already know everything about the show). The series plots the exploits of the remaining crew of the gargantuan Red Dwarf, a huge mining ship in deep space. A rediation leak wipes out the entire crew, apart from Dave Lister (Craig Charles), the greatest slob ever known and example to men everywhere. Frozen in stasis during the accident, he was revived once the rediation in the ship had dropped to a safe level to find the crew had been wiped out (courtesy of Holly, played by Norman Lovett, and a hysterical character as anyone who has seen 'Queeg' will verify). A holographic version of his nemesis, Arnold Judas Rimmer (Chris Barrie) soon joins him, and shortly after that they encounter a humanoid that evolved from the ship's cat. Aplty named 'Cat', and played by Danny John-Jules, the Cat is one of my favourite TV characters of all time - he even carries a portable iron in case of creases. Over the years Red Dwarf has been running, they have picked up extra crew (Kryten and Kochanski), lost Red Dwarf, found Red Dwarf, lost Red Dwarf, met Ace Rimmer a few times and so much more. To tell you a little about even half of their exploits would take me months. If you have so far missed out on this visual feast, I highly suggest you hot-foot it to the video shop and get yourself a few videos. With the movie expected out next year, you'll want to be able to call yourself an addict by Christmas!

- 19/07/01 Hi. Know its been rewritten, but I'd still like a bit more character info/description. Imagine you're describing the series to someone who hasn't ever heard or or seen the whole phenomenon that is Red Dwarf before!
My favourite has got to be 'Backwards' - an oldie but what a goodie. moomin |
