Reggie PerrinNewest Review: ... volumes to me. The daily worries and annoyances of Reginald resonate far more with my own than those of any character I've seen on screen in the last ten years, and boldly deals with a character who is mentally falling apart. It's a witty and clever show with a real emotional angle that I personally found both profound and painfully close to reality. Some of the other characters are not ... more |

It's something I've often asked myself - How *Does* everyone else cope with modern life?! I am not very familiar with the original version of Reginald Perrin, but this reimagining speaks volumes to me. The daily worries and annoyances of Reginald resonate far more with my own than those of any character I've seen on screen in the last ten years, and boldly deals with a character who is mentally falling apart. It's a witty and clever show with a real emotional angle that I personally found both profound and painfully close to reality. Some of the other characters are not fully developed, but Reggie is the main attraction and he is generally played ... Read the complete review

The original was not a masterpiece and of course a comedy rather than drama. However there was something warm about the writing and the characters that seeped pleasantly into our inner selves and our society. The re-make was a bit pointless from an artistic view point. The characters were under developed and unbelievable. I did not laugh at any stage during the 6 episodes. With the first 5 episodes there was a very minor element of suspension so the poor final episode was not a disappointment in that expectations were very low. Even though I'm 'only' 32 (yes, 32 isn't that old, really) I have quite distinct memories of watching the original series of 'The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin' with my family (albeit repeats at the time). It is one of a few sitcoms that I remember watching as a child, along with 'Ever Decreasing Circles' and 'The Good Life,' but 'Reginald Perrin' was probably one of the funniest featuring the late great Leonard Rossiter. For that reason, I was really pleased when I saw that the BBC were making a new series based on the seventies classic and immediately sky-plussed the whole series. The new series, renamed 'Reggie Perrin', stars Martin Clunes in the title ... Read the complete review

I actually got quite excited when I heard a remake of Reggie Perrin was to hit our screens this year. My dad had always told me how funny the original show was but I had actually never seen it, so I was keen to see what this new version, starring Martin Clunes, had to offer. I am very sad to sat that the answer to that is not very much at all. Reggie is a complex and miserable character overall who suffers from extreme boredom in his day to day job as a marketing expert for razors at Groomtech. He is fed up with life and his boss so in that respect he does hit home with an awful lot of people in this world. I just find him over bearing and totally ... Read the complete review
