Relic Hunter hit the TV screens back in 1999 and lasted for three series before it was cancelled in 2002. Produced by a Canadian company, Fireworks, in conjunction with German, UK and other European financing. Their main aim seems to have been to create a series that could be presold to a large number of countries from the offset. That way the money they can spend on an episode is known before starting. To be able to do this the series would have to have a broad, cross-cultural appeal and to get this Fireworks created Professor Sydney Fox (Tia Carrere) and the series Relic Hunter. Now before I begin this opinion, I can hear the criticism against it but hear me out, that's the beauty of it. The series has been running since 1999 and has racked up three seasons in America. Relic Hunter follows the exploits of lecturer/ ancient artefact expert and recoverer Sidney Fox (Tia Carrere) and her trusty British (aren’t they all!) lecturer assistant Nigel Bailey (Christian Anholt). The other main character is a dizzy blonde receptionist Claudia (Lindy Booth), a student stuck working with Sidney in order to fill out her internship. Raiders of the Lost Ark anyone? This new show debuted on Sky One this month and follows the adventures of Sydney Fox (Tia Carrere), an explorer and history teacher, and her assistant Nigel, on their quests for ancient artefacts (the opening episode had them looking for a bowl which belonged to Buddha in Nepal). It is basically a cross between Raiders of the Lost Ark and Tomb Raider and as such comes across very well. The special effects aren’t bad and it is quite humorous in places.
