RhonaNewest Review: ... Benes’ whose mistakes with his relationships with women always have him at Rhona and Lisa’s mercy with their incessant need to question his relationships and what’s wrong with the women he goes out with. They are also accompanied by an annoying waitress figure (whose name escapes me) who seemingly socialises with them at every unnecessary turn. But ‘Rhona’ neither has the panache or material needed to carry off an incredible trick such as this. ‘Dressing For Breakfast’ failed, ‘Game On’ supposedly succeeded and ‘Rhona’ joins a short list of British sitcoms that try to... more |

The three things you need for a good comedy are not present here. A good lead character, a good script and good supporting characters. ‘Rhona’ fails on all three counts. Seemingly side-stepping the casualness of the approach favoured by Jerry Seinfeld and Ellen DeGeneres, she embraces it instead. She has learnt to be as manic as Ellen but drawl like Jerry. Her adventures are mindnumbingly ‘boring’ and takes steps such as sound effects and fantasy sequences to punctuate the situation’s punchline (with regularly embarrassing effect). Lisa (as played by a downturn Mel Giedroyc) tries her best to provide support as a kind of ... Read the complete review

I gave the show a shot because I know that Rhona can be really funny and I feel some sort of need to support shows that break new ground like having a lesbian for a main character. The thing is, despite trying really hard to like Rhona it has turned out to be the kind of show that I instantly forget. I think maybe the problem is that I can almost see them trying to be quirky. While some of scenes are the kind of conversations that I have had with friends, others are obviously written with a 'see how clever we are' sort of attitude. Saying that though it is far from the most terrible show on tv. It is watchable but it is just nothing ... Read the complete review

I had expected great things when I found out that Rhona Cameron was doing her own sitcom. Then when I found out that Mel Geidroyc (Light Lunch and Late Lunch) was to co-star, and that her co-presenter, Sue Perkins, had also been involved in some of the writing, I couldn't wait. But "Rhona" has been a bit of a disappointment so far. It's often easy to dismiss the early episodes of a new sitcom (I really disliked Father Ted to begin with), until you get used to the characters, but even allowing for this, "Rhona" just doesn't seem to have what it takes. Rhona Cameron is an excellent comic and was also very good presenter of Gaytime ... Read the complete review

I didn't bother to watch the first episode of Rhona as the whole naming a sitcom after the star thing seemed revoltingly American. I saw the last ten minutes of the second episode and have been glued to it ever since. Okay, so Rhona Cameron isn't a great actress, but she has that 'wouldn't she be nice to have as a best friend' charm that keeps you watching. The rest of the cast have the same likeable quality which meant I forgave them for the fact they're never going to be winning any Oscars for acting. The writing and direction could be a little sharper, but there are enough funny lines and bizarre happenings to keep me watching. I really like ... Read the complete review

I must admit I was not expecting much from this comedy, before i watched it, and i belived that the first uk Lesbien comedy, was just a way to get people watching. And i am afraid I am right, they have just put a new scenario, in the same old lame format, with tired material. The reason the comedy is not very good it that there is nothing new in a programme that is meant to be ground breaking becuase it has a lesbien as the star, this might have worked in the early 90's but we are now in 2000, and we expect more. Another thing did I laugh outloud to this programme, no, can I even remember what happened in an episode only two days ago, no. ... Read the complete review
