Advantages: funny, easy morning viewing
Disadvantages: being axed in December
Hurray for Rise! (on weekdays 6.55am to 9am) Unfortunately this great morning show is finishing mid December, so I will have to make the most of it whilst I can. So why do I think its so good? I've never really been one for morning TV in the past, I was never that keen on big breakfast or gmtv and BBC1 morning TV is far too intellectual for me before the hour of 8am. A couple of months ago our video clock broke so to tell the time in the morning I would turn on the tv to see the time on teletext and ended up flicking the channels. Rise is presented by the very funny Iain Lee, who used to present the eleven o'clock show and Kate Lawler the winner of BB3. Dougie is a kind of third presenter who covers when Iain or Kate are away and does a lot of the entertainment reports. A lot of it is very silly, but its excellent trivial viewing for when I'm eating my toast and getting dressed. Rise has the following features: REALITY TV Rise has a bit of an obsession with reality TV. At the moment they have a reality TV 'monitor geek' called Kitty who talks about what is going on with the salon, fame academy (when it was on) and pop idols. When Big Brother was on they were very in to that and the big brother people seemed to take root on the rise sofa of a morning. So I didn't really need to watch any reality TV, I just hear about it on Rise. Not that I fancy watching people sing or cut hair, Big Brother is my only real reality TV indulgence. They tend to have a lot of pop idol rejects on there. A couple of weeks ago they had Ricardo, the rather camp Brazilian hairdresser, from Salon 1 NEWS The news is on at 25 past and 5 to the hour. It's presented by the voluptuous Zora 'something for the dads' as Iain Lee often says. She's not quite Moira Stewart, she's quite husky and tries to make the news sound sexy. ENTERTAINMENT REPORT This is a five minute snippet that talks about music, films, awa
rd ceremonies etc. There is also a slot where they link up with two American reporters in L.A Mindy and J.D of hugely white, shiny teeth. They talk about Hollywood gossip, films and award ceremonies. REALITY TV STATESIDE This is when there is a brief slot talking about reality TV shows in the U.S which are weird and wonderful, i.e. the straight man who gets a makeover from five gay men. LOOK AT THE PAPERS This occurs at around 8am. Ian looks through the headlines and this is often the time when his comic genius comes out and he can be really hilarious. Kate goes through some of the stranger stories in the papers and this bit can be very funny. GUESTS There always a couple of guests on the show and how good they are does vary. Rise doesn?t tend to get A-List guests when Holly Valence appeared earlier in the week it was a bit of a sign that her career isn't what it once was. They do have some good guests, they had Uri Geller and basil brush on there the other week. QUESTIONS FOR GUESTS The last ten minutes of the show are taken up with people ringing up asking the guests questions. I don't see this part of the show this much as it's ten to 9 by then. Rise is a show that doesn't try to be something its not. It's fluffy and low brow,. The male presenters have to be funny and any woman on the show has to be scantily clad. Kate Lawler is still in her skimpy summer clothes she must be freezing. It's a fun show with lots of irreverent, trivial talk. I shall miss it when it goes in December

- 15/11/03 I am either busy this time in the morning or just coming round and psyching up for the day. :-) |

- 03/11/03 I don't really think Kate Lawler is that natural a presenter... They should team Iain Lee back up with Daisy Donovan (as they were in 'The 11 O Clock Show') to try and save the show! |

- 02/11/03 Great review. I've watched RI:SE pretty much since it began, it's a shame it's being axed. Glad to see other people appreciated the show as well.
