The Rockford Files is a classic comedy drama TV series from the 1970's, set in the United States, and starring the terrific James Garner as Jim Rockford, a witty, charming, wise-cracking, ex-con (for a crime he didn't commit), turned PI.
There were about six series in all, and a few movies too. The series is set in Malibu, where Rockford lives in a mobile home on the beach (can't be bad!). Each episde begins with the camera panning across Rockford's desk, and we hear the familiar sound of his telephone, followed by a humourous answerphone message which is different in each episode.
Then comes the fabulous theme tune, and the show begins! Usually Jim is being asked to help someone out of trouble, which tends to land him in trouble himself!
Alongside Jim, regulars in the show are his father Rocky, Beth, Angel, and Dennis, a cop who helps Jim out on occasion, anything from running a search on somebody, to turning a blind eye when Jim is in trouble, which does seem to happen rather a lot!
It's packed with action, car chases, fisty-cuffs, flashy cars, beaten-up cars, funky music, funky fashions, big hair, and dodgy skin-tight trousers, I love it, and I'm delighted that it's now available to buy on DVD. Series one - four complete will cost in the region of £40.00, so at a tenner a season (each being around 23 episodes) is well worth the money in my opinion.
i used to love watching the rockford files, and the reruns are as watchable as ever. Starring james garner as a private detective in america, he lives in a mobile home, and gets himself into all sorts of scrapes, not like the pi shows today all full of boobs etc, a good series with good characters made all the better for james garner been cast. I can never remember the car he drives in the series i think its an old beat up gold chevvy.
