Disadvantages: Hard to validate findings in documentary

Ross Kemp on gangs is a Bafta winning documentary series that is aired on Sky One. The series follows former eastenders star Ross Kemp who previously played grant Mitchell in the television soap. Ross Kemp travels with a camera crew around the world, interviewing and speaking to gangs and those affected by gang violence. This documentary certainly excels in accessing an aspect of criminal life that is very hard to see. Interesting as criminal as the acts are, gangs often have quite legitimate political motivations.

At present there are four series. Each consist of around four episodes and last for approximately one hour including advertisements. Episodes include: London, Rio de Janeiro, El Salvador, Colombia, Liverpool and Belize.

The series consists largely of interviews and presents quite a balanced view of gang culture. Ross Kemp interviews both the perpetrators and victims of gang violence and focuses on official government responses to such acts too. In my opinion this series provides an interesting insight to ever increasing phenomena in all societies. Ross Kemp on Piracy has also just begun to air on Sky One on a Monday nights and consists of three parts.

Summary: Well worth watching if you enjoy action packed documentaries
