The wife and I are generally fans of American sitcoms, we loved King of Queens, Friends, and everybody loves Raymond etc. However they have all stopped making new shows so we end up watching repeats over and over again on Sky TV, so when we saw Rules of engagement advertised as a new series starting on the comedy central channels we looked forward to is starting.
Like all these shows I think it takes a few episodes before you really start to enjoy them as you get to know the characters and the way they interact.
Well after watching the first few we found we really liked it and after seeing most of the first few seasons we now love it, and it has become one of our favourites.
The show focus's on two couples Jeff and Audrey who have been married sometime, Adam and Jennifer who have recently got engaged and live in the same apartment block and their single (sex addict) friend Russell.
Jeff (Patrick Warburton) is for us the funniest character, a large guy he is a mans-man loves a beer while watching sport and loves to make fun of others with sarcastic put downs, particularly Russell who is the opposite of Jeff in his stature leading to the two of them swapping constant insults such as Russell referring to Jeff a cave man, and Jeff calling Russell a leprecon and asking if he is tall enough to ride on roller coasters yet. (You may recognise Jeff's voice if you have watched Family guy as he plays Joe Swanson)
Jeff's wife Audrey (Megyn Price) works full time so generally meets up with the others in the local dinner. Audrey has to be more serious generally, if only to keep Jeff in line, but she also likes to have digs a Russell normally regarding his sex life as he dates as series of young sexy women, Such as asking "do you have to get her home early as it is a school night".
Living across the hall from them in their apartment block are Jennifer (Bianca Kajlich) and Adam (Oliver Hudson) a young couple, recently engaged and just getting used to living with each other and the trials that brings. Adam is not the brightest and a little naive and vain leaving him open for abuse from the others, an example of this was when he grew a small goatee beard which he thought made him look sophisticated, Russell and Jeff thought he looked stupid but told him it was fantastic and suggested it would look even better if he dyed it a different colour.
Jennifer has to spend a lot of time explaining things to him and talking him out of situations.
Finally there is Russell (David Spade) he is a self obsessed, selfish and arrogant, add to this he is single and unwilling to commit to any relationship. He is a successful business manager who after upsetting or sleeping with a long line of female assistants is forced by management to interview and hire a man for the job, who he then makes go to therapy classes on his behalf as he cant be bothered himself, an basically uses him in many inappropriate ways to help him get more sex.
As I said earlier the show has become a big favourite with us. Take the time to catch a few episodes and give it a chance especially if like us you enjoy the shows I mentioned before. Comedy Central are now showing the third series on a Monday night at 9 o'clock but often of a weekend they will show a whole day of certain shows including this one thus giving you chance to start at the beginning.
Very funny and well worth looking out for.
Summary: If you like other American sitcoms you will love this
