Advantages: Salem, nick bakay

Disadvantages: sugary morals, to many repeats

We all know the plot now, as its being kicking about for a while now and so most people are familiar with the main characters. Going out on CITV on the mid afternoons, as far as British TV schedule runs, this is a show meant for pre teens, this is in fact not true. Although it shows later on Nickelodeon, it airs at about 7.30 pm in the states. Ok that does not say a lot but in my opinion its not meant for kids.

Unusually for an American show some of the humour is very subtle, blink and you’ll miss it , it’s a genuinely funny show, mainly due to the writing efforts of Nick Bakay, who is also the voice of the Salem and incidentally, the angry beavers. The acting talents of Beth Broderick ( Zelda ) and Caroline Rhea ( Hilda ) make a great comedy double they play off each other very well . Sometimes I have almost slipped off the sofa for giggling so much. I totally fail to see how kids get the jokes. One occasion that springs to mind is when some pilgrims are zapped in to prepare a thanksgiving dinner! Salem talks and the pilgrims point, and shout witch, witch.. To which, the cat replies pilgrims, pilgrims. This might not be that funny in black and white but in context I lost the plot.

Being true to American ideals the show does have a tendency to be overly moralistic with every show containing a ‘message’, this is not a bad thing as it reinforces moral teaching from parents and/or teachers and heavens know I need a little bit of moral guidance.

Sometimes the show can patronize the viewer, well patronize this viewer. It’s a feel good show, its bright, breezy, nothing bad happens that cannot be fixed. Harmless escapism is hard to come by legally but this show does the trick. if you haven’t had the chance to watch this yet , pull your head out of the sand or get down from your intellectual high horse and give it a go.

I started to watch this quite regularly while off sick, but I didn't think it was healthy. And I'm sure she's not a teenager.

I love this show -- it's especially good when you're feeling hung over!

My little 10 year old daughter loves this show....and so do I....as you say, there is a bit of humour in it for everyone.....and Salem is wonderful.
