Samantha Who is an America sitcom that is shown on E4 here in England and is generally quite a funny show that I enjoy watching. It's in its second season now and is shown on Monday evenings at 10pm.

The idea for the show came from Cecelia Ahern, the Irish novelist who wrote the very popular book, PS, I love you, among others. When we first meet the title character Samantha, she is just coming out of an 8 day coma after being hit by a car. Upon waking up she finds she has retrograde amnesia and even though she knows how to go about daily life she has no idea who she is or what her past life was like. She cannot recognize anybody or anything she used to do. Although this is a comedy this is quite a scary situation and I couldn't imagine what it would be like to not remember anything and then have to try and life your life as normal as possible.

The first season was funny because slowly, by talking to the people around her she finds out she was not a very nice person. She is a vice-president in a Chicago realty firm and going back to work is a real challenge. She finds out her assistant is scared of her and that she gets deals done by being an absolute b**ch. In the second series she starts getting more flashbacks and sees what she did in the past but the first series she generally relies on the words of other people so it is nice to see the progression from series one to series two because I think the concept could have got a bit stale but in my opinion it doesn't.

Samantha takes her amnesia as a sign that she needs to change and perhaps become a better person so she sets out to do this, much to the amusement and sometimes puzzlement of the people around her. Samantha is played by Christina Applegate, an American actress, probably best known for her work on Married with Children, Friends as one of Rachel's sisters and in the movie The Sweetest Thing with Cameron Diaz. She plays the part really well I think, she adds a bit of comedy as well as being a bit ditzy at times too. She has a great wardrobe and pulls it off well as in my opinion she is quite pretty.

There is a good supporting cast as well which make the story quite comical. Her parents are brilliant. Before her accident she hadn't spoken to her mother for two years. Her mother wants to have a relationship with her though and during the series they go about working on their broken relationship which is funny at times as both are as stubborn as each other and then often clash heads even though they do truly care for each other.

Samantha then has two best friends. Firstly there is Andrea, her co-worker who is a party girl and kind of wishes Samantha would go back to how she was before the accident, fun loving and bitchy as she thinks she's more fun like this but she still sticks with her and I think secretly is a good girl at heart.

Her other friend, Dena is the awkward, larger sized girl who she actually hasn't seen since the seventh grade. In her nasty days Samantha would never have been friends with a person like this but Dena convinces her they have always been friends and she is actually a really good friend to her. Samantha sees this and continues to be her friend, much to the dislike sometimes of Andrea who doesn't always get on with Dena.

Todd is Samantha's long suffering boyfriend. They have a strange relationship. We find out from various flashbacks that she is quite mean to him and is wary of commitment so why he stays with her is actually beyond me but he did. After the accident she doesn't know who he is so he attempts to move on but slowly they start talking again and become friends and have a sort of on-again, off-again relationship.

The series premiered on 15th October 2007 and there is now a DVD featuring all the episodes of the first series. In my opinion I wouldn't say that it's a classic but it is a funny sitcom and very watchable and one that I think will run for a while and stay fresh.

Oh! You've got the 2nd season already? I can hardly wait until it airs here. I have so much admiration for Applegate - especially now after her surgery.
