Advantages: Fun
Disadvantages: Toffee nosed chefs
I've just finished watching this, and I have to say I quite enjoy it, but only get to watch it every fortnight.
The show is fronted by James Martin, and is a mixture of 'live' cooking and clips from other cooking shows. For example today's show had a clip from Two Fat Ladies and The Great British Menu. They generally have a section for wine selections as well.
Whilst I like the programme I do wish they'd do more food that paupers like myself could afford. Some of the recipes they come out with are just over the top, take today's recipe "Sea bream baked in a salt crust with roasted fennel and grapefruit", of all that lot, the only thing I'm ever likely to have hanging around my fridge is the grapefruit, and whilst I could buy in the other items to make a special meal, the amount of other ingredients needed as one offs make it not viable economically.
But the show is good fun, the omelette challenge is always good for a laugh; two chefs race against each other and a board of previous guest chefs to create an omelette in the quickest time. Most of the time they end up with a mess of scrambled eggs on the plate instead of an omelette, and I'm sure many of them aren't fully cooked, the winning chef at the moment managed theirs in 16 seconds, and too be honest I can't believe the centre was cooked thorough.
Some of the clips are good, Two Fat Ladies and the Hairy Bikers are always worth a watch, but I could give The Great British Menu a miss, the food here is even more out of the reach of Joe Average than some of the meals prepared on the show, and the judges are the most pretentious people ever to grace the small screen. The sort of people you'd like to clip round the ear and tell them to try entering the real world.
As with all these shows, the quality varies from week to week depending on the guests, but overall James Martin makes a good job as a host and manages to make even the dullest of chefs appear mildy interesting.
