Narated by Zach Braff as his character J.D.
Theme tune "superman" by Lazlo Bane.
Released at the end of 2001, this comedy drama created 150 twenty minute episodes split into 8 series, (so far).
* BRIEF PLOT
The show is mainly narrated by Zach Braff as his character, Doctor John Michael Dorian, or JD as he is known. Giving his version on the events happening during that particular show...
It is set in a teaching hospital called Sacred Heart where the many camaras follow the lives of several doctors and staff around as they go about their day to day business at a fast pace, almost seeming to trip over each other as they rush around.
With each episode telling so many different stories concerning several of the hospital staff and some of the patients, involving some funny scenarios and even some not so funny scenarios, including the odd death or two, (but what do you expect from a hospital drama, not every episode can have a happy ending).
And as each episode ends with the brief narration from Zach Braff, as his character J.D., summarising the days events and how each individual member of staff, and sometimes even patients have been affected by the days results... the show seem to have its own meaning indeed.
* MAIN CHARACERS...
* Doctor John Michael Dorian, or "JD" (played by Zach Braff) is the light hearted younger member of the team who lacks a little confidence, usually being undermined by his superior and mentor Doctor Cox.
* Elliot Reid, (played by Sarah Chalke) is J.D.s close friend and fellow intern, who does have a little romantic involvement with him, although things don't go according to plan. She does have a tendency to put her work before her life mainly because she believes that male Doctors are trying to undermine her abilities.
* Doctor Christopher Duncon Turk, or Turk,(played by Donald Faison) is another intern at Sacred Heart and is J.D.s best friend, knowing him from collage. The pair tend to create many troubles and tend to spend their time joking about everything around them. There relationship is sometimes seen by others as what they call 'gay love'?
* Carla Espinosa, (played by Judy Reyes) is the head nurse and ended up married to Turk during the series...she does tend to cover up small mistakes that most of the interns make but as she has a tendency to overreact to everything, and with an annoying habit of interfering in peoples lives.
* Doctor Percival Cox, or Perry, (played by John C. McGinley) is the hospitals senior physician and the resident director of the hospital. He is seen as J.D.s role modal although he does enjoy belittling the poor intern at every opportunity he can... but he also like to pick on everyone else so J.D. doesn't take it personal.
* Doctor Bon Kelso, (played by Ken Jenkins) is the Chief of medicine who comes across as selfish, cruel and totally heartless to everyone else in his hospital, and care.
He is the type that believe a hospital would run a lot smoother if it wasn't for the patients that clog up the system. Although underneath that hard shell does lye a totally different man...or so it may seem.
* Janitor, (played by Neil Flynn) is, as the name states, the janitor of the hospital who does have a habit of enjoying playing tricks on the interns, especially J.D., who he really seems to have a love hate sort of relationship with...
* IN CONCLUSION
I first started watching this when I was channel hopping, (much to the annoyance of the wife), and I stumbled upon what I first thought was another crappy hospital drama... but as I was about to continue hopping I realised that this was a little more interesting than I first thought... laughing at the quick witted banter between J.D. and his mentor Perry, and giggling at the almost sexist remarks between Turk and his beautiful lady Carla... I was soon watching as many episodes as was showing.
In my opinion this program is a great American comedy and a rather bizarre look at hospital life as if seen through the eyes of a young doctor (J.D.).
It is a far cry form such hospital dramas such as ER or even Holby City, seeming to be on a lighter side to life in a busy hospital, although some episodes to touch the heart when a death does occur, seeing how it affects everyone involved before death, and how they deal with the negative results afterwards.
Although it is seen more a comical look inside a hospital some of the scenarios can be far from comical, albeit filmed in a sort of sensitive way indeed, (as I said... sort of). Bringing many different emotions and some rather strange operation into the viewers life...
The narration from J.D. (Zach) really does give the show that little bit of charisma and does help with the story quite a lot... giving a more in depth meaning into what these professional people have to deal with.
This is a great show and is well worth watching, I do realise that it is often show on television channels such as E4 or the like but you can get a copy of each series for around £15.00 from amazon.co.uk... or even get the first 7 series box set for less than £130.00, (although buying them separate does work out for less than £105 so it would be wiser to go for the individuals rather than the box set... unless you like neatness that is).
Summary: No mention of MRSA...at all.
