Advantages: Laugh out loud funny, characters that really grow on you
Disadvantages: Erm...it's not on enough?
Although it has been on TV for several years, I am a quite new convert to Scrubs. My 14 year old son has been watching it for a while and it's one of those programmes that just seems to grow on you over time.
Scrubs is an American TV series set in a teaching hospital called Sacred Heart. It revolves around the lives of several characters, most of whom work in the hospital. The show has been described as a comedy / drama; it has a huge amount of comedy from clever witticisms, bizarre imaginings, odd characters, manic rants and "Did I just hear that?" moments, which make it all the more shocking when the dramatic moments occur, sometimes right out of the blue.
MAIN CHARACTERS
Dr John Dorian (commonly known as JD): What I would call the main character in the show. The vast majority of programmes are from his point of view and are narrated using his thoughts. We first meet JD as a nervous intern straight out of medical school and follow him through his career, friendships and relationships. JD has interactions with most of the other characters and some of the shows most surreal moments come from his fantasies.
Dr Chris Turk (known as Turk): a surgeon and JD's best friend since rooming together at college and medical school. JD and Turk have an incredibly close relationship. Turk is cool and confident bt not afraid to lt his feelings show.
Dr Elliott Reed: Despite the man's name Elliott is a female medical physician. She's intelligent, neurotic and not just a little bit crazy. Elliott has an on / off relationship with JD throughout the seasons in a way not dissimilar to Ross / Rachel in Friends, a similarity that is mentioned during more than one scrubs episode.
Carla Espinosa: a Latina nurse, married to Turk (in later episodes), devoted to her job, caring, but a bit bossy and controlling
Dr Perry Cox: Usually just called Dr Cox. A medical attending physician known for his long hate-filled rants about all aspects of the hospital and it's staff. Always calls JD a random girls' name and seems to hate most people, including his family but cares deep down.
Dr Bob Kelso: The hospital's Chief of Medicine and therefore everyone's boss. Only seems to care about money and therefore generally appears cold-hearted and mean.
The Janitor: I think technically he's a supporting character but he should be a main character. Spends most of his time thinking up ways to annoy JD who he detests. The Janitor doesn't actually have a name though it has been claimed it will be revealed in the last episode ever. A strange man who keeps a squirrel army, invents things out of eating implements and always seems to be hanging around. Probably my favourite character though which might say a lot about me!
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS
Jordan Sullivan: Hospital board member and Dr Cox's ex-wife, whom he gets back together with but still always calls her his ex-wife. Often sarcastic, vindictive and nasty, sometimes she is mean to people just for "funsies"
The Todd: Not sure if he has a full name! The Todd is a surgeon who appears to be completely brainless and obsessed by sex but is often named as the top surgeon. Often to be found wearing tiny "bananahammock" speedos, eurgh!
Ted: Hospital lawyer, but Goodness knows how they ever avoid being sued as he's a particularly sad example of a man who appears to know nothing about anything, least of which the law.
Doug: Inept medical intern who finds his vocation in the morgue (the only place it's impossible to kill someone). Worrying habit of leaving dead bodies lying around the hospital.
Several famous people have also had small roles in Scrubs, either as staff, patients or visitors including Michael J Fox, Heather Graham, Matthew Perry, Colin Farrell and Elizabeth Banks.
The show is a bit bizarre at times, but laugh out loud funny. Maybe an acquired taste (My husband hates it!!) but I would recommend it to anyone!
Summary: Just watch it!
