      A good series

The secret Diary of a call girl is a series staring Billy Piper based on the real-life experiences of high class call girl.

Billy Piper plays the role of Belle. Belle doesn't work as an escort because she has a drug problem or because she can't find work. She does the job because she likes and enjoys it and have become very successful and popular with her clients. She is not ashamed by what she does yet none of her family friends know and she seems to need to justify her job an awful lot.

Each episode lasts for about 25 minutes. There are currently 3 series, although I would think there will be a fourth as it is going from strength to strength as a series and has been left open for further episodes. The series are not very long with each one only having around 6-8 episodes.

Billy Piper plays the part very well and with a lot of confidence and energy. It's a great show with very interesting storylines and a great cast. This is not show for any prudes out there and almost every episode contains graphic scenes and some level of nudity. I don't particularly like this, but I can look past it to enjoy the show.

Some of the storylines can be very funny, like when one of Belle's clients wants her to baa like a sheep whilst they are in bed. It very much reminds me a British take on Sex and the city and has a didn't sexual theme each week. As the 3 series have progressed it has become less about Belle's job and more about her life and friends and how her job can help, or get in the way of her relationships and decisions. Definitely worth a watch.

      Explicit!

The secret diary of a call girl is loosely based on the book 'the adventures of a London Call girl' by Belle du jour. Recently it has been exposed that her real name is not Belle du Jour and her true identity is public.

The TV series is shown on ITV 2. The current series is aired at 10pm on a Thursday. Back series can be purchased on DVD. The show stars Billie Piper who plays a call girl called Hannah. She works as Belle. She owns her own, rather gorgeous flat and in her own words enjoys sleeping with men and money, so she may as well combine the two.

Belle (or Hannah) is very career minded and at first doesnt let her career stand in the way of anything. This is thrown into question some way through the series when she starts falling for a man, and it really complicates her life. As her stories go on, she obtains a protege called Bambi, who she teaches the tricks of the trade.

Like every call girl, Belle has a madam, who gets her clients but is ever demanding and adds a good aspect to the storylines.

The episodes follow the life of Belle and the trials and tribulations of her various clients and trying to keep her business a secret.

Secert diary of a call girl is quite explicit, and doesn't have a deep and meaningful storyline. It is however, entertaining, easy to watch, fun and modern. There has been lots of criticism that it glamourises the industry and I can see why people think that, but hopefully people have a sensible enough head on them to know that most people do not work like that.

A series that I found no interest in

This programme was so hyped when it was first shown on ITV2. I don't think you could watch anything on ITV without seeing an advert for it.

So as I like to give new things a watch I thought I'd give it a go. I wasn't quite sure how it would hanndle the story matter - would it gorify prostitution? would it be believable.

It is supposed to be based on the high class escourt Belle du Jour's life. But I'm not sure if this is a real person or whether it is a pure work of fiction.

Well on to the programme - it is only on for 30 minutes and once you have the taken the time out for the adverts it probably is actually on for about 22 minutes. I found that the acting was a little bit wooden and the story was a bit predictable. The high class call girl who is very plain in real life - falls for one of her cleints but can't do anything about it. No doubt in later episodes she then meets this person in her day time role.

I say assume because I never stayed with series. I watched the first one, wasn't that impressed but thought I'd give it another go, but for me it really didn't improve enough for me to watch it anymore. I know people who really rate this series and it did make a second series but it just isn't for me, not sure what I wanted from the show but it was just too poorly acted, and the story just wasn't there.

        A really interesting programme

Secret diary of a call girl is all about a girl whos real name is Hannah who is a high class escort. Posing as Belle its all about how she earns her money as an escort and the type of clients she has. Her life is very focused on her job and her friends and family have no clue as to her real job as she tells everyone she is a legal secretary.

Played by Billie Piper the character of Belle is a smart sophisticated London girl who claims she dosnt need relationships and shes happy being single. She says that her work gives her everything she needs.

The second series sees Hannah confide in her best freind that she is an Escort, she used to date him years ago and she is completely oblivious to the fact that he is in love with her. As time unfolds, new characters are introduced such as Bambi a young girl who come to Belle for advice on how to become an escourt and things start to get complicated when Hannah starts dating and falls for a guy called Alex.

          -

An adaption of the book 'The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl' by Belle De Jour, the Secret Diary of a Call Girl is now in another series and can be seen on ITV 2 on a Thursday Evening.

Starring Billie Piper, the series follows the life of a high class hooker working for herself in London, who makes accounts of her adventures on a daily basis.

Some people may think that this program is smutty and fair enough I have to agree in some respects, however it gives you detailed accounts of why people like this lead the lives that they do, that they don't see is as being a disgraceful job as it is, but a profession and at the end of the day, more or less that is what there whole life entails.

Billie Piper actually plays a really good part and she is an attractive lady who pulls off the high class prostitute act to a tee. Some originally said when she accepted this role that it could have been the worst thing that she had ever done and degraded herself by actually doing it, however the program itself although it does have scenes of an explicit nature, it doesn't take it to that next level and make it disgusting, it gives you an idea of what the men with a bit of extra money or fed up with their wives get up and what sick little fantasies get them off.

Belle, or Hannah in her real life revolves her whole life around her career, she has her regulars and she has the ones that she probabl would rather not have, however this series see's Belle, meet someone by accident who wasn't a client, as she accidently falls for him, this being a whole new thing to her, that she has actually got feelings for someone, which is affecting her job and is making her consider what she should do.

This series also see's Belle have a partner in crime by the name of Bambi, in which they work together and keep each other safe, something that she has never done before and always preferedto work on her own.

So what will the series bring? Will she continue with her job and be able to keep it a secret from the new man in her life or will she ditch her profession to start a new life. Yet to be revealed.

A rose tinted view of prostitution

The Secret Diary of a Call Girl began recently on ITV2 and is a television adaptation of the book that originally began as a blog called "Bell de Jour". The blog was 'allegedly' written by an anonymous high-class lady of the night otherwise known as an up-market hooker. 'Bell de Jour' is a name taken from the 1967 French film starring Catherine Deneuve as a neurotically repressed housewife who one day decides to overcome her boredom by offering her services to the local brothel where she is able to indulge her fantasies of self-degradation. According to the theorists this was supposed to be an example of how a woman can empower herself. A similar underlying theme is present in Secret Diary in which Billy Piper stars in the leading role as Hannah, who keeps her life as 'Belle de Jour' a closely guarded secret by telling her family and friends that she is doing the rounds as a legal secretary.

According to Piper, who echoes the sentiments of the blog author, the programme tells the story of a "witty, well-educated girl who enjoys having a lot of sex and likes being paid a lot of money for it." However, like the book and the blog, the TV programme has been accused of glamorizing prostitution. Some have even argued that the programme presents Hannah as a positive female role model and shows prostitution as a viable and reasonable career option for young women to take up. For example, Belle works for an 'agent' rather than a 'pimp' and we are always made fully aware that Belle thoroughly enjoys the sex that she is selling. Although in one episode she does have to do the business with one middle-aged, paunchy professional, the majority of blokes she meets are all clean cut well dressed types with Hugh Grant mannerisms.

The criticisms are valid given that the vast majority of women who are sex workers in the UK are driven to it through drug dependency, poverty or sex trafficking. The majority of these women live in desperate circumstances and are more often than not, likely to experience some form of violence whilst trading with their 'punters'. Despite some references to the less glamorous side of the trade (condoms, kinky requests, lube, impotence), unlike in the real world of trading flesh, the everyday desperation and high-risk working conditions are virtually absent from Hannah's life. According to Cari Mitchell of the English Collective of Prostitutes there are some elements of truth in the programme but it is "a rose-tinted, commercialized view of the job with a bit of soft porn thrown in" and one that is "obviously aimed at clients".

As far as my own view of the programme is concerned: each episode is an extremely lethargic and tedious process. Billy Piper is wasted. For an actor who was so exceptional as Dr Who's travelling companion, she is far from convincing in her role as a seductive femme fatale. Although admittedly I've not yet watched a single episode of 'Secret Diary' all the way through on account of sheer boredom and dozing off, I should perhaps warn readers that there is a lot of 'getting your kit off' and usually at least one token sex scene per episode but of the latter I am unable to describe anything in detail because I can't remember what happened - it's all so unarousing: more like a wet weekend than a wet dream. You'll recognize Hannah's corrupt 'agent' as the woman from the Kenco coffee adverts and all I can say is that the coffee adverts are far more stimulating. If the programme is glamorizing the industry then it must also be putting high class hookers out of business up and down the country. I've seen more exciting sexual encounters on Spring Watch with Bill Oddie. And God the men she meets! Are males of the species really this bland? Each one of Hannah's clients conjures up all the personality of an estate agent at an office party. Surely sex with a dirty old man in a raincoat would be far more of a turn on than jumping into bed with any of these dull turds of human kind. It would certainly be far more entertaining television.

And there is an other immensely irritating aspect to this series: never before in the history of television has the soft focus lens been used so much in a half hour TV episode. Every time Piper appears or enters a scene, whether she's talking with her boss, making the coffee or spreading her legs and sucking her thumb, the camera immediately switches to soft focus and this is further emphasized by a carefully positioned light source or shafts of sunlight streaming in through a window. At times it feels like you're watching one long advert for a box of chocolates and you almost expect Piper to start munching on a Cadbury's Flake while she's giving a hand job. The picture is so softly focused that it almost appears blurred. Anyone who watches the whole series will end up wearing glasses for all the wrong reasons.
