Advantages: Great characters, great scenarios
Disadvantages: Scheduled terribly
'Seinfeld' was the most popular TV show in America from about its fifth season onwards and it's not hard to see why - in my opinion, in American sitcom terms it's second only to 'Frasier'. Bearing this in mind, it baffles me, and the few other UK 'Seinfeld' fans, why BBC2 decided to show it on Tuesdays at around 11pm instead of the Friday night slot it deserved. I mean, it's far better than some of the rubbish that Channel 4 shows on Fridays like 'Spin City'. Anyway, rant over. The show is about four not very likeable characters who live in New York: Jerry (a a stand-up comedian and the Seinfeld of the title); Elaine (has worked at a book publisher and a clothes catalogue); George (a neurotic man who tends to alienate women with his weird quirks) and Kramer (first name Cosmo, a total wacko with sticky-up hair). George is the best character in my opinion, he is a short, bald man who just can't seem to do anything right and his parents are by far the best occasional characters. 'Seinfeld' has been described as a show about nothing in particular and I can see where that comes from because a lot of the episodes are based around inconsequential matters such as the frequency with which Jerry's new girlfriend changes her clothes. The best episode I have seen (I haven't seen the last season yet, due to air on Paramount Comedy soon I hear) is definitely 'The Soup Nazi' where Jerry, Kramer and the rest of them find this place that does great soup but is run by a strict, mean man, nicknamed the Soup Nazi. If BBC2 do ever get round to airing more episodes, I hope that they're on at a more reasonable time when more people can appreciate them. If they don't then you're just going to have to stay up, aren't you?

- 11/08/00 This is the best comedy series I've ever watched. I never thought anything would beat Frasier. My fave characters are George and Kramer. I saw most of them on Paramount late last year, but hoping they show more. I missed the last ever episode so hope they show that again |
